Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾywp /⁠ayāb⁠/), Manichaean script: 𐫀𐫏𐫀𐫁 (ʾyʾb /⁠ayāb⁠/). Cognate with Parthian 𐫀𐫃𐫀𐫖 (ʾgʾm /⁠āgām⁠/). Further etymology unclear; not found in Old Persian.
