[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾywp /ayāb/), Manichaean script: 𐫀𐫏𐫀𐫁 (ʾyʾb /ayāb/). Cognate with Parthian 𐫀𐫃𐫀𐫖 (ʾgʾm /āgām/). Further etymology unclear; not found in Old Persian.
