มะเร็ง
Appearance
Thai
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly from common Tai derived compound words หมาก (màak, “blister; rash”) + เรง (reeng, “small”) in the sense of inflaming skin rash.[1] Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩣ᩠ᨠᩁᩮ᩠ᨦ (“inflaming tumor on skin”) and Shan မၢၵ်ႇႁဵင်း (màak háeng, “cancerous tumor”). Or, possibly Semi-learned borrowing from Malay merengsa (“irritant; incurable, obstinate, unhealable”).[2][3] Compare Khmer ម្រេញ (mrɨñ, “cancer; ulcer”).
