/dump'-ster di:'-ving/ 1. Searching refuse outside buildings in the hope of finding confidential data (especially security-compromising) or equipment that either works or can be fixed. A "dumpster" is a "skip" - an open-topped container designed to hold large quantities of rubbish. Back in AT&T's monopoly days, before paper shredders became common office equipment, phone phreaks used to organise regular dumpster runs. Discarded copies of AT&T internal manuals taught them much.
