about
I wrote this song in late 2018, for a fundraising event in aid of the Bristol-based charity Above And Beyond. They provide money for patient care and invest in hospitals, giving 'above and beyond' what the NHS can provide.
Then in April 2020, having performed it on TV for Russell Howard's Home Time during the coronavirus lockdown, we decided to release it as a digital single. Every single penny will be going to this charity. I'm really proud of it and hope you like it.
The NHS has been stretched to its limit for years, and more recently has been under incredible strain. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who continues not only to work for it, but to fight for it.
This song is a largely personal account of some of my experiences of the NHS; about what it has done for me, my family and my friends. Ironically, I can't actually play it live right now, as A&E nurses were called upon to stitch my finger back together earlier this week (following an altercation with a bread knife whilst washing up). However, we all contribute to making the NHS "free at the point of need". So this song is as much about all of us, about our relationship with each other and a community that is stronger when we work together, to create something as wonderful as the NHS. Now if we can find a way to pay health professionals properly, hopefully we won't need charities and retired army Captains to help fund it in the future.
Like everything else right now, this was a socially-distanced recording. I recorded my vocals and guitar from my house in Bath, then sent the track onto a team of stunning musicians and technological wizards. Huge thanks to every single one of them, especially Dave Draper who mixed and mastered the whole thing so brilliantly.
We only discovered this great band from Boise, Idaho this year and have spent the last few months gleefully catching up on all their releases. You would be well advised to do the same. My Little Owl Records
Kirsty headlined our very first My Little Owl Presents... gig in Sheffield. She is breathtakingly talented and featured on the soundtrack of Danny Boyle's film Trance. My Little Owl Records
Helen is headlining our next My Little Owl presents... gig in Sheffield on November 16th 2013. She plays lovely, quirky, slightly jazzy, sometimes a bit folky pop songs. My Little Owl Records

This might be my favorite thing Daniel has ever recorded. I shared the story part with my children, who also absolutely loved it. The songs are great too. alex79uk

I'm not sure I can select a favourite track as so many of these are wonderful. Sublime combination of fantastic lyrics with compelling musical performances. helendanger
