"oshun"

The story of a Parisian percussionist / beatmaker who wondered around the world and lived in places like Algeria, Egypt and Spain in quest of hidden music knowledge and spiritual wisdom. Since he was 14 years of age he started playing percussion drums and took classes of Afro Latin congas later. Then he learned to play the guitar, and one day a good friend of his gave him an old Akai Mpc 2000. Since that day he fell in love with samplers and that same week he found a bag full of vinyl records in the street that someone has dumped . That’s when he started being addicted to «crate digging» and «sampling» and therefore to beatmaking.

On his last adventure in Cuba, where he attended some in depth percussion courses in La Havana and Santiago de Cuba, he learned a lot from the locals. Drums in Cuba are related to the "Orishas", to the Santeria and to the Yorubas. Oshun is an Orishas Goddess of the rivers and the forests and Yovenek was told that She was the one who was looking after him during his Cuban wanders. This tape is what he felt he had to give her in return as a present and thank her for what she offered to him.

Oshun is packed with 60 minutes full of jazz fuelled fresh baked crispy drum breaks, intelligent use of sample phrases and minimalistic cuts in an Isolationist fashion on Jazz Fudge of the late 90's. A study into abstract hip hop inspired by the boom bap era but looking towards the future. Oshun is where New Orleans Jazz spiritualism meets the intellectualism of experimental hip hop beat makers, students of boom bap who fused musique concrete, science and noir cinema into their beat smith artistry. All these under the eye of the Great Orishas Goddess to whom this tape is dedicated to! This is for sure an important milestone on our Nekubi tapes catalogue of underground classics!
