Wiki Loves EuroPride in Albania
During EuroPride Week, September 12-18, WoALUG organized the Wiki Loves EuroPride edit-a-thon.
In collaboration with the PRO LGBT Albania organization, we developed a two-hour edit-a-thon on September 14th. A group of 5 people joined in translating articles about the LGBTIAQ+ community, stories, and concepts.
Due to the lack of articles on this topic, we plan to develop several events and a longer edit-a-thon in the near future.
So far, participants have created 7 new articles and edited 8 articles.

Behind the scenes with Australia's Wiki Loves Earth 2022 winner
Joshua Tagi is a landscape and nature photographer from Melbourne, Australia. He submitted several photographs to this years Wiki Loves Earth, and placed 1st in the competition with a photo taken in the Grampians National Park. Two more of his photos placed 4th and 15th, with photos of Mount Murchison and Fitzroy Island.
We invited Joshua to share further details about his photos, which you can read below.
The Pinnacle, Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia
The Grampians National Park is one of Victoria’s most well known and visited national parks. It offers a plethora of hiking opportunities in which to see the magnificent sandstone landscapes that have been sculpted over a period of millions of years. Being an avid hiker, who is also into landscape photography, this is the perfect place for me. I had been to the Grampians a number of times previously and knew that in the right weather conditions, fog fills the valley below, while the tops of the mountain peaks poke above the, providing a viewpoint above the ‘sea’ below.
During one of my visits to the park in 2017, I had identified that such conditions were due to occur the next day so I drove up to the Sundial carpark, the closest point to the Pinnacle lookout, the night before and camped the night there. The next morning I set out before dawn to get the Pinnacle, the highest peak of the surrounding mountain range, and when I reached the summit I was greeted to the scene that I had envisioned. Fog completely blanketed the valley below, and as the sun was starting to rise, it was illuminating the surrounding landscape in a rich, golden glow. My aim in taking this photograph was to convey the dreamy, ethereal landscape that I saw and share that through the photographic medium.
I entered the Wiki Loves Earth 2022 competition after I saw a banner advert for it on the Wikipedia website. Having browsed the previous entries that had taken out some of the places, I thought that some of my photographs might be in for a shot, so I decided to give it a try and enter a few. The Pinnacle is my favourite out of each of the shots that I entered/placed within the competition.
Mount Murchison, Tasmania
Located in the rugged west coast of Tasmania, Mount Murchison is a stunning, steep mountain peak, rising out of the landscape between the towns of Tullah and Queenstown. I had seen the trail head marker in passing a few times when being on this side of Tasmania, and decided during my time there in 2019 that I would make the attempt to summit it. The track is not for the faint hearted or first time hikers, with the track ascending very steeply and being difficult to navigate due to the lack of markers. However, I ended up making it to the top of the summit, even with fog rolling in around me and was able to get this shot before I was enveloped in it. The pandani that can be seen in the foreground is endemic to the region and is well known for it’s presence in the alpine regions of central, western and southern Tasmania.
Fitzroy Island, Queensland
This photograph was taken at Nudey Beach, on the western coast of Fitzroy Island, located about an hour’s ferry ride from the Far North Queensland town of Cairns. This beach was ranked as Australia’s best beach in 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. Isolated and containing pristine white sands, lush green tropical greenery and a stunning array of underwater sealife, this beach really has it all. This photograph was taken on my first and only trip to the island so far in which I had an absolute ball snorkelling along the various beaches here, whilst also hiking up to the summit of highest point on the island and exploring the turtle rehabilitation centre. It is truly a beautiful island in every sense of the word and definitely a place worth exploring if you are ever in the area.

A Börthday present for Wikidata - the DACH Culture Contest
Wikimedia Österreich, in cooperation with Wikimedia Deutschland, started the DACH Culture Contest as a Börthday present for Wikidata 10th anniversary! It features two categories: "Libraries in Austria, Germany and Switzerland" and "Culture in Austria, Germany and Switzerland". So if you would like to improve data about libraries, books, music, art, video games, cinema etc as a börthday treat, join us and get the chance to win some nice prizes! You don't have to live in the DACH region in order to participate. The contest will last until October 16, 2022.
Reopening of Museu Paulista and other news
Museu Paulista, or Museu do Ipiranga, was created in 1893 by the state government and is the oldest public museum in the state of São Paulo. Since 1963, it is part of the State University of São Paulo (USP) infrastructure and preserves art collections and other objects from Brazilian domestic and public working spaces (tools of crafts such as carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring, typography).
In 2013, the Museu Paulista was closed because of conservation and security issues. Since 2019, this monument was fully restored, the installations were modernized and its size doubled. After nine years, it finally reopened this September 7th, during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the independence of Brazil.

The GLAM-Wiki partnership with Museu Paulista was signed in 2017 and included a strategy for the digital dissemination of the museum collection on Wikimedia platforms. The main question that we have asked ourselves was "How can digital dissemination contribute to the Museu Paulista mission?" and it was applied in four specific fieldsGuia para a elaboração da estratégia de difusão digital do Museu Paulista. Acesso em: 2022-10-02.:
1. Infrastructure - "one needs to consider the infrastructure as a continuous process, instead of mere acquisition and use of technological resources. The chosen platforms guide processes and influence how the collection items will be conserved and accessed today and in the future."
2. Institutional organization - "As a public and university museum, Museu Paulista also must be a space for permanent empowerment and transversal integrative team dynamics. This is especially relevant for digital dissemination which today permeates everyone in the museum instead of referring only to one specific department related to technology."
3. Content - "The dynamics of digital convergence modify the relations between publics and the knowledge under the custody of cultural institutions. Museu do Ipiranga is a pioneer in the free digital ecosystem. Its action changed from a content depositary to a curator of open content in environments on the web."
4. Community - "The digital dissemination contributes to the contemporary ressignification of the role of museums by providing an immediate connection with the society to which museums serve and belong. The development of an accessible-free-diverse community around the knowledge under the custody of the museum walking together with the participatory dynamics of the digital, can contribute to the accomplishment of the mission of Museu Paulista."

Today, 33,449 media items depicting objects from some of the 200 collections kept by Museu Paulista are available on its GLAM-Wiki partnership platform. The museum itself relies on items uploaded to Commons to share its digital imagery with broader audiences. According to the GLAM Wiki Dashboard, the media files from Museu Paulista have 2,187,882 views per month, they are in use in 21,548 articles and 104 projects. 20.5K (62.77%) media files illustrate Wikidata items and 9.7K (29.84%) are inside ptwikibooks.

- New Project
The partnership between Wiki Movimento Brasil and Museu Paulista keeps on going with the approval of the grant for the research and innovation project "Publication, dissemination and network collaboration in the documentation of digital collections of memory institutions: interoperability between the information environments Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and the free software Tainacan" (FAPESP Grant number: 21/06767-8).
"The project proposes the development of a service that facilitates the publication and monitoring of editions and collaborations carried out by users of digital collections from memory institutions in the Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia environments. Therefore, it proposes the technical modeling of a feedback service, called roundtripping, between the information networks of the wiki ecosystem and the free software Tainacan. Tainacan has become an important free software for the management and dissemination of digital collections in a network of memory institutions in Brazil. There are important technical and operational challenges for the implementation of a service that not only allows the publication of collections from a digital repository of a memory institution, but also monitors the reuse, editions and collaborations of users in other information networks. By allowing the connection between the Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia information networks for the publication and encouragement of the reuse of the digital collections of institutions already published in Tainacan, the project aims to expand the circulation of heritage collections, make the knowledge generated about them relevant and, thus, value Brazilian material culture on the network society. The project is organized by researchers and officers from several universities in Brazil, along with members of Wiki Movimento Brasil Amanda Jurno and João Alexandre Peschanski.
Other news from Brazilian GLAM
Spring of Museums in Brazil: Between September 19th and 25th, Instituto Brasileiro de Museus (Ibram) organized the 16th Spring of Museums.
MUSEU DA CAPITANIA DE ILHÉUS organized a workshop about the access and the difusion of documents and the cultural heritage in the Wikimedia platforms.
MAG SEGUROS presented its GLAM-Wiki partnership and organized some expositions about it collection.
GLAM partnership with RHN: Now its official: GLAM partnership with Rede de Historiadoras Negras e de Historiadores Negros was approved by VTRS team. As we announced in our July Report, RHN wants to create a on-wiki Open Digital Repository of the academic production of Black Historians; Wikipedia articles about Brazilian black personalities and other people who played a leading role in historical events and processes; and add many Wikiquotes of Brazilian black researchers and great personalities, books, films and proverbs.
GLAM partnership with IEB: The partnership between Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) and Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (IEB/USP) was renovated and now we work with two new collaborators: Sônia Salzstein and Monica Duarte Dantas. In the first year of this GLAM-Wiki partnership, we uploaded the precious set of covers of Ariel - Revista de Cultura Musical, editted by Sá Pereira and Mário de Andrade, published between 1923 and 1924.

This month we met with the Prime Minister's cultural advisor. The objective was to present the Wikimedia France association and the issues we are committed to. This meeting allowed us to position the association as a privileged interlocutor for some national issues. It was also an opportunity to present the challenges of open content and the first report on open content in France.
This report was also presented at the 2022 European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting by GLAM staff member.
Residence at the Brittany Museum
After Clermont (see the report in French on Commons) Nicolas VIGNERON is now Wikimedian in Residence for a year at the Brittany Museum. Public presentations and workshops are already scheduled every two weeks, internal trainings are under way and of course, mass import and contents improvments are planned.
Digitisation of O Bharat, a bilingual biweekly published in Goa from 1912 to 1949
Context
It all started like this. During the Wikimedia session at Goa University in October 2021, it was realised that there is very little documentation about the ‘Goa Liberation Struggle’ on Wikimedia projects. So, in the meeting Prof. Vinay Madgaonkar from the Marathi language department took the lead to develop a project around this theme. The exhaustive list of freedom fighters, major incidents in history, the places related with struggle, monuments and memorials was prepared. The next day, to have a glimpse of the situation on ground, we toured a few places and monuments in South Goa. As we were shocked to see the sorry state of the memorials, we came across a monument of Govind Pundalik Hegde Desai known as Bharatkar (an editor of O Bharat), in a lush green forest near Quepem village. Being curious to know about the history of O Bharat publication, Prof. Vinay introduced us to the grandson of Bharatkar, Adv. Khagendra Desai who founded Bharatkar Hegde Desai Trust, non-profit organisation in Goa to archive the works of Bharatkar.
As both of us share the same vision, CIS-A2K partnered with Bharatkar Hegde Desai Trust, to relicense and digitise freedom fighter Bharatkar’s ‘O Bharat,’ a Marathi-Portuguese bilingual weekly, currently housed at Goa Central Public Library.
About the 36 Year Run of ‘O Bharat’ upto India’s Independence
Freedom fighter, social reformer and journalist 'Bharat'kar Govind Pundalik Hegde Desai, (7th Nov 1885 - 15th Aug 1949), started 'O Bharat' (in Portuguese) or 'Bharat' (in Marathi) on 6th November 1912. For 36 years thereafter, Bharatkar courageously protested the Portuguese occupation, relentlessly advocated radical and progressive social reforms and doggedly championed the cause of an independent and sovereign Indian Goa.
Partnerships
The partnerships with various stakeholders were developed after a series of discussions and official communications. The Bharatkar Hegde Desai Trust obtained official permissions from the State Government departments for the access of O Bharat volumes in the library. Goa Central Public Library provided access to the bound volumes of O Bharat and permission to scan them. Another local organisation, Bhakti Dnyan Marg Sanstha in association with Goa University Marathi Department identified few students for the digitisation.
Digitisation process and launch on Wikimedia Commons
The trustees of Bharatkar Hegde Desai Trust relicensed the two volumes of selected editorials published in 2018 and the whole O Bharat issues into CC-BY-SA 4.0. We conducted digitisation training with Prof. Vinay Madgaonkar and students, Shravani Parab and Shridhar Raut, from Goa University to scan 12000 pages in 8 days. The officials of Goa Central Public Library cooperated in access to original volumes and in the process of digitisation.
The Chief Minister of Goa inaugurated the project on Wikimedia Commons on India’s 75th Independence day, 15 August 2022. The year wise volumes of ‘O Bharat’ are now freely accessible to anyone in the world at any time anywhere. The uploading of the volumes is in progress.

GLAM Socialization; Wikistories for GLAM Competition
GLAM Socialization in University of Indonesia
At September 29, GLAM Indonesian held a socialization event of the GLAM Indonesia collections to the students of the national University of Indonesia in Jakarta. The event was attended by around 40 people, and in this program we presented many collections from various GLAM institutions in Indonesia and other countries. We also encourage them to use these collections freely, and share it with others who haven't been able to participate in the presenation. The students are mainly from the History Department and they were enthusiast during the presentation and the subsequent Q&A session.
GLAM Indonesia working together with the Wikistories team that have the pilot project in Indonesian Wikipedia held a 3-weeks long competition for Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums personnel to create as many Wikistories and upload GLAM-related pictures to support their stories. In less than 3 weeks, participants have created more than 187 stories using the new feature. The winner of this competition will be awarded with cool gadgets and invited to attend the Open GLAM Conference in Jakarta next November.

The Archivio Meraviglioso project has come to an end: here are the results

With the Archivio Meraviglioso project, the Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano is putting nearly two centuries of its history online. Not only by digitizing documents, bulletins, photos of activities and pictures of benefactors, but also by making them interactively searchable and freely reusable. The project is thus presented as an example of sharing accessible to all, thanks to a long co-design work between Fondazione Istituto dei Ciechi, cheFare and Wikimedia Italia, with the support of the Calib.ro design studio, the State Archives of Milan, the Icas 94 digitization laboratory and with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo The main objective was in fact to counter the marginality and exclusivity of the archive by making it usable by all. The transformation of the Institute's archival holdings will be carried out technologically, through the digitization of part of the archive, the implementation of data visualization that will be published online, and the development of workshops tailored to the content and audiences of the Istituto dei Ciechi.
It is a true professional digitization project, with high quality images published on the Internet Archive, but also a site that can be consulted and navigated by thematic paths. Between history, trivia, and graphic visualizations, it will be possible to follow the evolution of the institution and its approach to supporting people with visual impairments from 1840 to the present. Thanks to the advice of Wikimedia Italia, all the digitized works have been published under an open license, available and reusable by all. Special work has been done on the institute's "Il buon cuore" bulletins, made available as historical sources on Wikisource and linked to Wikidata. In this way, all data produced by the project will be searchable and reusable by all, including for future studies and research.
On September 29th, there was a project presentation event in Milan; the results of this project journey with the collaborative platform were presented and a reflection on how the world of archives is changing and the importance of archives was offered.

The Italian community's choices for 2023
In mid-September 2022 a survey was created as an additional element of evaluation for 2023 planning and was sent to about 330 active members of the Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap project communities. The survey had 5 questions, one general on Wikimedia Italia's activities, three on activities divided by strategic lever (project community support, free content, and cultural change), and the last one on the Materiality Assessment (is the process of identifying and assessing potential Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues that impact your business and stakeholders). In particular, to the question "What would you like Wikimedia Italia's activities in 2023 to focus mainly on?" most of them chose the answers "Advocacy activities aimed at improving the Italian and European legislative framework on free knowledge issues" and "on projects with cultural institutions to increase free content that can be used by Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap projects."
On the other hand, to the question about free content "regarding activities related to increasing the availability and usability of free content, what do you think Wikimedia Italia should mainly focus on?" most respondents indicated "on large projects, for example, with large cultural institutions or public bodies that make a large amount of content and data available".
To the more general question "At the values level, what should be the most important thing for Wikimedia Italy?" three answers were the most chosen:
- Increasing the availability and usability of free content
- promote institutional and legislative changes
- supporting the Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap projects
These results, complementing the work done in early 2022 that led to the definition of strategic themes (differentiating business objectives that connect a portfolio to the strategy), Wikimedia Italy is working on planning for 2023.

Wiki Loves Monuments Suriname first edition: 554 photos
This year the Build Heritage Foundation of Suriname took it upon themselves to organise the first edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Suriname, with assistance of Wikimedia Nederland. The team organised 3 photo walks and promoted the competition through a local radio spot and social media. Wikimedia Nederland and volunteers helped out with the on-wiki part of the competition, and thanks to the Wikidata team at Wikimedia Sverige and Wikimedia Movimento Brasil all the Surinamese monuments found their way into Wikidata. As a result, 554 pictures where uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for the competition. We are looking forward to finding out which 3 pictures will win one of the three prices!
New Zealand Thesis Project and Te Papa Forget-me-nots
New Zealand Thesis Project
On the 8th of September Zeborah, DrThneed, and Ambrosia10 presented on the progress of the New Zealand Thesis Project to a conference of New Zealand academic librarians at their Institutional Repository Day 2022. The slides for this presentation can be found here. The librarians were very appreciative, particularly of all the work undertaken by DrThneed in cleaning, collating and uploading the thesis data into Wikidata. They were also impressed by the visualisations generated from that data. Work on this project continues. As a result of social media outreach explaining the project, international academic librarians have been reaching out to DrThneed for guidance on replicating her workflow. She has been assisting editors associated with other academic institutions to upload thesis data sourced from those institutions into Wikidata. Te Papa and Forget-me-nots
New Zealand's national museum Te Papa is running a project to improve articles about Aotearoa's native Myosotis (forget-me-not) species with new and enhanced articles, hundreds of specimen photographs for Wikimedia Commons, and improvements to Wikidata items.
Planting our forget-me-nots in Wikipedia – Te Papa
The work is a pilot run by Avocadobabygirl for Te Papa as it explores the best ways to use its open collections and data. Forget-me-nots – the genus Myosotis – have been Stitchbird2's area of research for over a decade, making it a rich starting point. She has also already done extensive work on articles, including Myosotis rakiura.
The team will soon load 340 specimen images to Wikimedia Commons using OpenRefine, along with data mapped to a new Specimen template and selected Wikidata items. The process and template are being documented on Te Papa's Wikipedia:GLAM page.
Records of the Auckland Museum

The 56th edition of the Records of the Auckland Museum was published in September 2022. The annual publishing of the records offers an opportunity for us to integrate the latest research coming from the museum into Wikipedia, Wikicommons and Wikidata.
From the six journal articles, 40 citations have been added to various Wikipedia pages. Five articles have been created on topics featured in the research, Motueka Island (Pigeon Island), Poikeke Island, Pison morosum, Pison peletieri, Pison marginatum, and two Wikidata items were created for researchers who did not previously have an item.
One of the newly published articles directly integrated its content with Wikimedia. In An historic album of New Zealand bryophyte specimens., an article detailing the purchase and identification of a mid-19th century book of plant specimens, linked directly to the book's Wiki Commons page and each individual specimen photo is linked to its image hosted on WikiCommons.
As each specimen was identified in the article, the images from the book could then be used to illustrate a variety of plant articles. Thanks to this, 238 Wikipedia articles across 12 languages (Cebuano, English, Esperanto, French, Hungarian, Korean, Macedonian, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Vietnamese) now have images associated with pages, as well as 73 Wikidata items.
Requested photographs project
Requested photographs categories on Wikipedia can be dauntingly large, and often out-of-date. Originally beginning a year ago as a way to identify which Auckland Museum archival photos could be used in different articles, the requested photographs in New Zealand project has now finished its first stage. All articles on locations across New Zealand have been checked to see if a photograph is needed, and if so, sorted into regional subcategories.
Requested photographs are a great way to integrate GLAM content into Wikipedia, and as a way to inspire volunteers to become editors or to submit photos. During the second COVID-19 lockdown in Auckland, several museum volunteers systematically took photos for every Wikipedia page within walking distance from their houses. Volunteer editors are now able to find locations on OpenStreetMap of image requests close to them for every region of the country. Places such as Digital NZ, Flickr Creative Commons and Auckland Libraries Heritage Photographs are invaluable sources for finding properly licensed photos, especially photos of locations which may not exist anymore.
The next step of the project is focusing on the flora and fauna of New Zealand: identifying which species need photos, and if images can be integrated from GLAM collections or iNaturalist.

The results of GLAM editing contest
September was the time to sum up the results of the editing contest dedicated to museum’s collection of artworks called GLAM Month with the National Museum in Cracow that ended on 30th of August. During a contest 70 articles on the museum's collection were created and developed by 15 participants. The special prizes were awarded to the winners and all the participants were thanked for their contribution. EwkaC was awarded for articles in the Did you know section and Cyfrowabiblioteka and Witia were awarded for the highest number of articles.

GLAMwiki Coordinators Meeting in Prague
Wikimedia Poland representative Kamila Neuman took part in the 4th Biennial European GLAMwiki Coordinators Meeting, hosted by Wikimedia Czech Republic, 14-16 September, 2022.
It was a great time when experience, good practices, failures and ideas among European Wikimedia affiliates were exchanged.
GLAM online meeting on wikiresidence in Polona
At the end of September the third online GLAM meeting was organized. The goal of the GLAM meetings’ cycle is to get the community more familiar with GLAM activities and invite Wikimedians to contribute to the GLAM projects.
Redaktor GLAM talked about wikiresidence in Polona, the biggest Polish digital library with more than 3,6 mln objects. During the second part of the meeting we all had a chance to see how one can get involved in a project by editing Wikimedia projects.
Since August 2020 around 466 k of images from Polona have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. They include portraits, archival views of villages and buildings, boards showing fauna and flora, illustrations from books, manuscripts, etc. It’s the biggest collection uploaded to Wikimedia Commons within partnerships in Poland.
External projects, great results and high level of independence
European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting
European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting was held in Prague from September 14 to 16. During this event, numerous ideas, contacts and experiences were exchanged. During the meeting, the GLAM activities of Wikimedia Serbia were presented, as well as the #1Lib1Ref campaign for the region of Central and Eastern Europe.

Wiki librarians organized the third edit-a-thon in 2022 under the name "Streets of Serbia and the World". In this edit-a-thon 9 editors participated who wrote 31 articles and published 90 photos on Wikimedia Commons.
Cultural Heritage of Serbia
During the Cultural Heritage of Serbia project, 65 articles on Wikipedia in the Serbian language were written and updated, while as many as 864 files were uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons.

Bookfair back on site
After a couple of years with online or hybrid bookfairs in Gothenburg this year the fair is back to an in person event again, and with that the volunteer group who has been covering the fair since many years are back from doing online coverage. This year ten participants, spread out over the four days, walked around to take photos of authors and other notable participants (with more uploads to come), and answered questions about Wikipedia, free knowledge and other topics. The themes this year was South Africa, voices from Ukraine, the climate crises and crimetime, and articles are being added and improved as part of the activities.
Cultural history in High Schools
Going in to year seven with our project where third year secondary school students write their year long project as a Wikipedia article we have added a new partner. As an addition to Nordiska museet and Centrum för Näringslivshistoria the students can this year also focus on architecture and design as Statens centrum för arkitektur och design are joining in. So far the students have created user accounts, registered to the dashboard and started the process of selecting articles to write, and come February the new articles will be moved from sandboxes to the main namespace.
More identifiers from National Historical Museums of Sweden on Wikidata
The National Historical Museums of Sweden, one of the GLAMs that Wikimedia Sverige is helping to become more connected to Wikidata, has been doing great progress adding their identifiers to items using the P9495 property. Until recently, they were only able to use this property with items representing people and organizations. This was due to the limitations of their website, as this was the only record type that had landing pages there. However, now other types of records are supported, such as places (example: Ängelholm municipality) and physical objects (example: a button from 1884). So in the recent weeks, the museum staff have been importing thousands of their identifiers to Wikidata, using OpenRefine.
Also in September, Wikimedia Sverige was present at the Linked Data and International Standards for Cultural Heritage conference in Brussels, where we got the opportunity to speak about Wikidata, focusing on how GLAMs, such as the museums participating in this project, can partner up with their local Wikimedia chapters to get support in making their data more open and available. You will soon be able to see the recording of our session on the Royal Library of Belgium's Youtube channel.
The National Historical Museums of Sweden and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm are now preparing a seminar, to be held in November, to share their experiences working with Wikidata with the broader GLAM community in Sweden.
Swedish general election 2022
Ahead of the elections on 11 September 2022, we called for images of the elections and election workers, via blog posts and social media, to be added to Wikimedia Commons. We were also helped by a Wikimedians who took pictures of the election night. The result during September was 214 images and we are still in contact with a couple of parties who understand that freely licensed images of MPs are good to have in articles on Wikipedia and free to use elsewhere. It has not yet been decided who will be the new Minister of Culture.

GLAM-On-Tour @Zentral Bibliothek Zurich
The Zentralbibliothek Zürich is a public foundation and, as a university library, a scientific library. At the same time, it serves as a city and cantonal library for the provision of information to the general public. According to its statutes, it ensures, among other things, the most complete documentation and arching of published and unpublished Zurich information carriers (Turicensia). In partnership with this GLAM institution, Wikimedia CH organized a GLAM-On-Tour from September 15th to 18th. We welcomed 23 participants, from Germany and from Switzerland. We offered an entertaining program.
During the four days, valuable contents about Zurich, it's history and buildings and also the library were added in Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. For further information about the GLAM-on-Tour event as well as the program and the results please visit the project page (in German).
Digital day @Schaffhausen Library
The 19th September, in cooperation with the libraries Schaffhausen we celebrated the Swiss Digital Days. This event was embedded in a rich, publicly accessible kaleidoscope of events, which partly only take place online, but also - like this - in presence. The proven event format of the Wiki studio is ideal for this. The main target group are archivists and librarians, but also Wikipedians and people who want to become one are welcome to the Schaffhausen City Library on this day. Islamic art and global art
Khalili Foundation
A manuscript image (right) was given Featured Image status on Arabic Wikipedia, becoming the seventh such image on Arabic Wikipedia and the seventeenth Featured Image award for this project. This 13th century work shows a scientific explanation of eclipses and of the phases of the Moon. It appeared on the front page of Arabic Wikipedia on 17 September, getting more than 76,000 views.
There were no new articles or translations this month. I have been working on a draft about a museum exhibition and that draft is waiting for access to further research before publishing. The two images uploaded this month were cropped versions of previously-uploaded images. I created a few new Wikidata items to describe objects in the Khalili Collections, including a Wikidata item for a sudaysi, a type of coin that is worth one sixth of a dirham.
A main chunk of work this month has involved looking at how to use Wikidata to improve the Khalili Collections web site. I have used the LeafletJS software library to create Wikidata-driven maps that are independent of the Wikidata Query Service, and have been looking at ways the web site can host Histropedia timelines.
Work continued on an English Wikipedia task force page for visual art outside the Western canon. This is trying to do for the cultural gap what Women In Red did for the gender gap: provide wiki contributors with target articles to create or improve, along with references and resources that help them do so. I am still gradually adding identifiers and links for some items whose description is vague, but I think the page provides a good start to help the community create and improve articles.

New Smithsonian WiR
The Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative (AWHI) and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center have brought on Mia Cariello as a Wikimedia Coordinator. Cariello will focus on increasing the representation of AAPI women and women-identifying people on Wikimedia projects, building on her previous internship within the AWHI. Wikipedian in Residence Opportunity at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)
The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is seeking a creative and driven Wikipedian In Residence (WIR) to improve coverage of their collections on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. PAMM is a modern and contemporary art museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The WIR would be helping PAMM establish Wikipedia programming institution-wide. The Wikipedian In Residence will work closely with the digital team at PAMM with access to curators and staff for support and training.
On Wikidata, the WIR will add structured data and expand items about painting objects, artists, collections, installations, exhibits, and events. On Wikimedia Commons, photos of living artists will be taken and added with appropriate categorization. On Wikipedia, the WIR will improve articles about PAMM's artists, their key collections, and the notable art movements of which they are a part. The WIR will also engage community through edit-a-thons, virtual events, and staff trainings.

European GLAMwiki coordinators meeting
Prioritization for software development for content partnerships: workshops with communities
During the European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting in September 2022 in Prague, Sandra moderated a prioritization session for the most important content partnerships tools used in the Wikimedia movement. You can find the list of tools, and their prioritization, in the Etherpad of the session.
This workshop only reflected the views of European GLAMwiki coordinators, not of the Wikimedia community at large. We would like to repeat such workshops with many communities around the world, to better learn which tools should be prioritized in the next years. The Content Partnerships Hub is looking if we can repeat this session at various regional Wikimedia conferences. Please contact Sandra if you want to co-host such a workshop yourself!
Helpdesk or capacity building?
In a second workshop, Tore Danielsson and Axel Pettersson together with Susanna Ånäs and Jessica Stephenson, talked about the Content Partnerships Hub Helpdesk and ways for affiliates and partners to both get help and to share knowledge and experience. All participants contributed (see the session notes) to sort out different ways the Helpdesk could either be used directly or if the topics fell more in the Let's Connect capacity building program.

View it! tool has new features!
View it! is increasing its functionality with an advanced search option. Please consider helping the developers with language translation.
View it! is available across all Wikimedia projects and the developers have implemented localization for the user script. As of publication, there are now 8 languages supported, and you are invited to follow our step-by-step instructions to add additional translations to the tool in your own language.
View it! now has an advanced search menu. In advanced search, View it! users are able to choose from a dropdown list of properties to search by —"depicts" (P180), "main subject" (P921), and "creator" (P170)—along with an additional free text box and filters for Commons quality assessment and image resolution.

About View it!
The number of images displayed in a Wikipedia article is finite and highly curated by editors; through the tool, users will have access to the entire catalog of images on Wikimedia Commons (particularly those utilizing structured data), increasing discoverability and giving editors and readers a more broad experience. Our hope is that adoption of View it! will encourage contributors to utilize Commons more readily and include structured data with uploads.
