Track Comments for Vol.8:

1 - Cappa Rmx (1998)
My remix of Japanese abstract downtempo masters, CAPPABLACK. To this day, their dark-ish, moody debut album, "The State of the Night," gives me that je ne sais quoi vibe. A highlight of one of my first visits to Japan was a concert collaboration bringing together my gaming/soccer buddies from the experimental laptop collective COMPUTER SOUP as well as Masa & Hashim from CAPPABLACK in an intimate Tokyo underground venue called O-NEST. We even set up proper rehearsals in the tiny, jam-packed HEADZ label office, where their only semi-free desk was littered with multiple laptops, obscure Japanese folk instruments, and a full dual-Technics DJ setup. Good times.

2 - Ovalodyssey 2001 (2000)
My contribution to a cultural exchange festival in Hong Kong, organized by the Goethe Institute, taking inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The motto could also be read as a political statement celebrating artistic freedom, coming just a few years after the handover of Hong Kong. For this track, I started with only two short spoken-word phrases saying something in Mandarin about Hong Kong. I had several weeks to work on this piece in my cozy 17th-floor apartment and the only bullet point on my to-do-list was a breathtaking ferryboat ride every few days to rehearsals in a big, upscale opera house on the other island. Let the track speak for itself on whether it captured the essence of "true freedom of the arts" - well, perhaps it does by opera standards?

3 - Merve II (2012)
This piece is from a 4-track EP I produced for the renowned German theory publishing house MERVE, sadly never released. The EP was part of a larger, ambitious project exploring various aspects of developments related to climate change, a far less widely discussed topic back then (2012). My contribution included a talk on “disruption in electronic music” alongside this four-track format. I did get to present the talk on a prestigious panel at the West-Berlin Academy of the Arts one night, but the EP was unfortunately shelved as the entire project silently fell apart.

Another carefully curated sonic puzzle piece of a larger, ever-evolving momentary museum.

about

Oval Berlin, Germany

Trailblazing glitch masterpieces (1990s), hyperreal, futuristic post-rock (after 2010), club bangers with a twist (2016) - Oval is a celebration of innovation, skill & sensibility. With an undeniable instinct for the pleasantly irritating, the drastic & the dreamy, M. Popp keeps on pushing the envelope. No one out there plays the computer quite like him.
