No objection to peaceful protests, but violence & vandalism unacceptable: Biren
Guwahati: Chief minister N Biren Singh Friday said his govt has no objection to peaceful protests against the killing of innocent people, but vehemently criticised certain individuals among the agitators for indulging in violence and vandalism.
Speaking to the media in Imphal, Biren condemned the destruction of ministers' homes and looting of properties, labelling the perpetrators as "gangs" who acted under the pretence of a democratic movement. He assured the public that legal proceedings had already been initiated against those involved.
"I have repeatedly condemned the violence and expressed support for those genuinely protesting against the killings of innocent people. Peaceful and democratic agitation is a right, and we respect that," he said.
"However, in the name of democratic movement, some gangs have looted, burned ministers' houses, and stolen their properties. This is unacceptable, and we have already identified the culprits through CCTV footage. Legal action has been initiated, and I feel ashamed to publicly admit that such acts are happening in Manipur. Looting in the name of agitation is disgraceful, and it tarnishes the spirit of legitimate protests," he added.
The chief minister reiterated his commitment to upholding law and order while ensuring that those responsible for such violent acts are brought to justice.
Manipur Police said 32 people have been arrested in Imphal East & West and Bishnupur districts so far in connection with cases of arson and damage of properties of elected members on Nov 16.
