Lalduhoma advocates for unity among ethnic Mizos
Aizawl: Advocating for the unification of Christian church denominations and ethnic Mizos, Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma praised the recent formation of the council of churches in Mizoram and appealed to all ethnic Mizos to use ‘Zo' as a common nomenclature.
Inaugurating the second International Chin Christian Youth Conference (ICCYC) with the theme ‘We Are One' in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai town on Thursday night, Lalduhoma recalled said the first ‘World Zomi Conference' organised by the Zo Reunification Organisation (ZoRO) in 1988 at Champhai near the Myanmar border had selected ‘Zo' as a nomenclature for all ethnic Mizos living in India, Burma (Myanmar), and Bangladesh. ZoRO was founded by former Mizoram chief minister T Sailo.
"The British govt was aware of the fact that we are related by blood, sharing common ancestry and born out of the same womb, prompting it to convene the Chin-Lushai Conference at Fort Williams in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1892. The conference accepted that the Chin-Lushai community belonged to the same stock and should be administered under one administration. However, due to several difficulties, we have been divided into different countries and states," he said.
He said names like Lushai, Chin, Kuki, and others have been given to the ‘Zo' people by others and lamented that there have been misunderstandings, even resulting in violent conflicts between brothers.
The CM highlighted said the govt and people of Mizoram have provided shelter, food, and other necessities to tens of thousands of refugees and internally displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur. He expressed hope that this will further cement the political bond between the ‘Zo' people coming from different countries and states.
