Solo Leveling: ReAwakening Movie Review : Level up your expectations for a gripping anime adventure

    Critic's Rating: 3.5/5
Story: The compilation film of the South Korean series Solo Leveling features a world constantly threatened by monsters and evil forces. A young hunter protecting humanity transforms from the weakest to the strongest hunter of all mankind.

Review: Anime fans were treated to the big-screen outing of the final episode of Demo Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training earlier this year. Web novel-turned-series Solo Leveling follows suit with the movie, a recap of its Season 1 and two episodes of the upcoming season, Arise from the Shadow. The franchise is set in a world where humans with special abilities, known as Hunters, fight against monsters from other dimensions (Dungeon) to protect humanity. The Hunters' primary goal is to defeat the monsters, collect valuable resources, and strengthen their abilities to handle more powerful monsters and protect the world.

The recap, directed by Shunsuke Nakashige, written by Noboru Kimura, and designed by Tomoko Sudo, follows the story of Sung Jinwoo (Taito Ban/ Aleks Le), the Weakest Hunter of All Mankind. After a near-death experience (reawakening), Jinwoo receives a mysterious System that allows him to level up and increase his powers. As he grows stronger, Jinwoo becomes determined to overcome his weaknesses and rise through the ranks to become the strongest hunter.

The most impressive thing about the movie is its taut editing. Crunching 12 episodes into 120 minutes requires skilful editing, and the movie does not disappoint in that respect, though many sequences seem abrupt. While loyal fans will rejoice, new audiences will have many questions due to lacking context. Moreover, the narrative skips Jinwoo’s backstory and weaknesses, avoiding a strong character arc as he becomes powerful.

True to modern anime, the visuals here are striking, whether the battle sequences in the dungeons or Hirotaka Tokuda’s monster designs of magic beasts King of the Swamp — Blue Venom-Fanged Kasaka, goblins, werewolves, Knight Commander Igris The Bloodred, etc. Powerful human villains like Dong-suk Hwang (Yasuhiro Mamiya) and Kang Taeshik (Kôki Uchiyama) add to the intrigue. Exploring themes like self-improvement, perseverance, survival, and the dark side of being power-hungry — “Its (the player’s) thirst for strength calls forth the ghosts that roam the valley of death” add to the narrative’s depth. As the stakes increase, the number of quests and Jinwoo upskilling makes for a fast-paced and gripping experience. The action and animation peak in the fight with Igris, but the relentless battles make things tedious and overstretched by this point.

As the story segues into Season 2, featuring the first two episodes, viewers can expect new characters and magic beasts like Ice Elves and Ice Bears, as monsters become more powerful and menacing. The film ends in a way that fans will eagerly wait for Season 2 for more.

Solo Leveling: ReAwakeking movie serves as a great recap of Season 1 and a teaser for Season 2. While it may leave new audiences a bit confused, the film provides a solid overview of the story. The animation and story progression make it worth watching.
