Grow Tulips in pots

Tulips, one of the most beautiful and treasured flowers, are a delight to the eyes. They come in many different colours and are considerably easy to grow in the winter months. Here we mention some easy steps and tips to grow Tulips at home in pots.

Buy healthy bulbs

One of the easiest and quickest ways to grow Tulips is through Tulip bulbs. So, don't waste time figuring out how to graft them or grow them with cuttings if you want quick flowers.

Best pot

Although Tulips are primarily ground flowers that should be grown straight in the soil, if that isn’t possible even pots would do. To grow Tulips, make sure the pots are about 10-12 inches deep and are wide enough for there to be at least two bulbs of tulips inside.

Soil needs

Tulips need well-draining soil and do not like loamy conditions at all. So, it is best to have a mix of sand, garden soil, some organic manure, and fungal powder in the soil. Take equal parts of sand and soil and about 20% of manure to it.

Best time to sow the bulbs

Tulips are winter flowers and are best grown when the weather is not too sunny. Although the best time for growing them would be September and October, even in late January they can grow in colder places.

How to sow the bulbs

To sow the bulbs, first cover 30% of the pot with the soil mix and then sow the bulbs with the pointy sides up. The pointy side will have a small green node growing out of it, and this is what will be converted to a leaf later.

Filling the rest

Once the bulbs are sown, cover the rest of the pot with more soil, covering the pot about 80%. As the Tulips prefer cold conditions, the deeper they are the colder they will stay.

Water needs

Tulips should be watered well for at least the first few days after sowing. When the bulbs are first sown, make sure that the water flows out of the drain holes to ensure that it has reached the bulbs completely.

Time to wait

Once the initial process is done, keep the pot in a space on the balcony where the plant will get about 2-4 hours of direct sunlight daily, no more. As Tulips are more adjusted to cold conditions, a mix of direct and indirect sunlight will help them grow quickly.

When will the flowers be ready?

In the best conditions, one can see flowering Tulips as early as 60 days after the bulbs were sown in the soil. And if the area you live in is hotter, it might take over 4-5 months for the first flowers to appear.
