NEW DELHI: India's Krisha Verma secured a gold medal at the first-ever U-19 World Boxing Championships held in Colorado, USA, dominating the women's 75kg category.
Five other Indian boxers fought valiantly but fell short in their respective finals, bringing home silver medals.
The tournament, a significant milestone for World Boxing, served as the organization's inaugural global event.
Established with the aim of securing boxing's future within the Olympic movement, World Boxing seeks to replace the International Boxing Association (IBA) as the sport's primary governing body.
Verma showcased her acumen by securing a unanimous 5-0 victory over Germany's Simon Lerika in the final bout. Her triumph marked a high point for the Indian contingent at the tournament organized by World Boxing, a newly formed governing body.
While India celebrated Verma's gold, several other young athletes narrowly missed out on the top spot. Chanchal Chaudhary (women's 48kg) faced disqualification in her final match, while Anjali Kumari Singh (women's 57kg) lost to England's Mia-Tiah Ayton by a score of 0-5.
Both Akanksha Phalaswal (women's 70kg) and Rahul Kundu (men's 75kg) fought hard but were edged out by their opponents. Phalaswal lost 1-4 to England's Lilly Deacon, while Kundu suffered the same fate against USA's Awinongya Joseph.
Vini (women's 60kg) put up a strong fight but ultimately lost a close 2-3 split decision to England's Ella Lonsdale.
