A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his father after a fatal assault in County Dublin.

Stephane Benz, 29, of Gainsborough Lawns in Malahide was arrested following the attack on Urz Benz at about 08:30 local time on Saturday.

The 62-year-old was found unresponsive at the Gainsborough Lawns home after an alleged stabbing and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephane Benz appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court on Sunday afternoon.

A gardaí (Irish police) detective gave evidence of his arrest, charge and caution and said that Mr Benz made no reply when he was charged with murder.

Mr Benz made no comment during the court appearance, Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported.

There was no application for bail, but a defence application for a psychiatric assessment was granted.

The accused was remanded into custody and is set to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Wednesday.
