Denmark beats Malaysia 3-2 at Thomas Cup
NONTHABURI, Thailand (AP) - Defending champion Denmark overcame five-time champion Malaysia 3-2 on Wednesday as both nations marched into the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup.
Competing in Group D, Denmark needed Jan O. Jorgensen to beat Iskandar Zulkarnain 16-21 21-17 21-14 in the final match to clinch the tie, which finished 20 minutes before midnight local time.
Denmark and Malaysia joined China and France, the top two countries in Group A, in the knockout stage which begins Thursday.
In Group B, last year's runner-up Indonesia beat South Korea 3-2 but both nations already qualified for Thursday's stage.
In the women's Uber Cup, host Thailand beat Taiwan 3-2 in their last round-robin encounter. Both marched into the quarterfinals with Thailand as group leader.
Japan dominated Group A with three wins while Canada came second with two wins.
South Korea and Denmark advanced from Group C, while China and Indonesia reached the last eight from Group D.
