SHS Life Lesson: Conquer your fears,
do not let your fears conquer you
Written by: Gracia B. Abarca, SSCI1202
I grew up being more active in academics and extracurricular activities like
joining the school paper, the radio broadcasting team and school cooperatives.
I can say that I am somehow a nerd; that I am not a person who is used to be in
the spotlight. Because of this, joining Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2019 at Adamson
University is the most memorable moment in my senior high school life. For the first
time, I did not decline to face hundreds of people and be assessed physically like
what I normally do when asked to join contests like this. At first, I can say it was
nerve-wracking. My mind goes on like a broken record playing thousands of ways
I can fail and make a fool of myself on stage. But as it goes, I did not reckon to
my thoughts and push through joining. I may not have won the largest crown or
not the one who has the most sash, but I end up going home with a tiara as third-
runner up and an experience that thought me to face my greatest fears. It is
much more than what any title can give.
I am certain that I emotionally grew in senior high school. I learned to
accept what I truly am and break from the shackles of society’s standards and
expectations. I also learned to explore, to try new things that are out of my
comfort zone. Most importantly, I learned to boost my self by looking past my
doubts and focusing more on improving.
With this lesson, I will continue to explore myself and the world. As long as I
do not harm people around me, I will do what is necessary for my emotional and
intellectual growth. And along the way, I will share the lesson I learned and
encourage people not to be afraid of doing things that they would gain
something at just because of the fear of not being enough. Because it is our moral
obligation to improve ourselves in all aspects possible and attainable.
