Work Breakdown Structure in Project Management

The document discusses the work breakdown structure (WBS) which is a hierarchical breakdown of all tasks and deliverables needed to complete a project. Developing a WBS is a collaborative process that involves breaking the project down into smaller, more manageable components. Examples are provided to illustrate how a WBS can be structured at different levels of detail for a project.

The Work breakdown structure (WBS)

■ The WBS is the heart of the Project

■ It is a visual way to show what the project is about and how it is
put together to reach the goal of the project
■ Definition:
■ A hierarchical decomposition of the total scope of the work to

be carried out by the project team to accomplish the project

objectives and create the required deliverables (PMBOK 6 ed.)

The Work breakdown structure (WBS)

A work breakdown structure cannot be developed in isolation. Rarely can one

person know everything required to complete a project, least of all a project manager,
who may not be a subject matter expert. Creating the WBS is a team effort. A WBS
does not specify how or when tasks will be done.
The development of Work Breakdown Structure involves subdividing the major
project activities or sub-activities into smaller, more manageable activities until the
activities are defined in sufficient detail to support the management and
development of project works.
Work breakdown structure or WBS in project management is a method for
getting a complex, multi-step project done. ... Work breakdown structure is a
hierarchical tree structure that outlines your project and breaks it down into
smaller, more manageable portions.

Process of developing a WBS

■ Use as basis the component analysis in order to obtain a

comprehensive list of all deliverables, functions and
activities
■ Follow a hierarchical system of numbering, starting with
the project and cascading downwards to the last logical
level of activities
■ Ensure that no activities are overlooked

■ Remember that a WBS does not indicate sequence of

activities
