Assignment 4 (CLO2, PLO2, C3) Marks (10)

You are working as a site engineer in XYZ contractors Pvt. Ltd. Your Project Manager asked you
to supervise the profiling/X-section work related to a road project as the chief surveyor was not
available. You are required to calculate the earthwork volume using all methods i.e., mid sectional
area method, mean sectional area method, trapezoidal method, and prismoidal method.
following data from the details provided in Table 1 below:
1. Calculate all the PGLs against provided NSLs.
2. Draw cross sections of road at RD 0+050, RD 0+230.20 and RD 0+450 and label according to
the calculated data.
3. Also draw the final L-section of the road using MS Excel ® software.
4. Also mention total cut or fill for the given road at the end.
5. Calculate the percentage of variation in cut or fill from all mentioned methods.
Table 1: RDs and NSLs

RD (ft) NSL PGL or FRL

0+000 2602.610 2677.380
0+050 2616.730
0+100 2624.900
0+150 2620.310
0+200 2619.220
0+230.20 2615.950
0+300 2608.390
0+350 2615.000
0+400 2615.340
0+450 2642.810
0+460.47 2648.660

1. Assume width of road = 16 feet

2. s:1= 2:1
3. There is an upward grade of 1 in 150 from RD 0+000 to RD 0+100. And 1 in 100 upward
grades is provided from RD 0+100 to RD 0+460.47.
4. For drawing L-section of road, assume datum to be 2565 feet.
5. Assume any missing data and mention it in your assignment as well.
Note: Please try to restraint your values up-to 3 decimal points.
