The document discusses rational functions of the form f(x) = (ax + b) / (cx + d), focusing on their horizontal and vertical asymptotes, intercepts, and behavior near these asymptotes. It provides examples of how to determine asymptotes, domain, range, and graphing techniques for rational functions. Key properties such as positive/negative intervals and the effect of parameters on the graph are also highlighted.

3.3 Rational functions of the form f ( x) 
cx  d that.EE
ax  b
Rational functions of f ( x)  form have horizontal asymptotes (H.A’s) at values other than y = 0.
cx  d
One way to examine horizontal asymptotes of rational functions is to divide the numerator and denominator by x
and examine the end behaviour of the function.

Properties of Rational Functions

 Slope (Positive/Negative, Increasing/Decreasing)

 Compare the slopes of secant lines in each interval

 Choose two points in each interval and compare the y-values going from left to right.

 Positive/Negative Interval (Sign of Function)

 Choose a test value in each interval and determine whether the function is positive or negative

Vertical Asymptote X = Set the denominator equal to zero and solve for x (Exception: If the numerator

make the numerator equal to zero)

Stretches the curve (horizontally and vertically) Does not affect the asymptotes, domain or range

‘ d ’ Shifts the vertical asymptote

The two branches of the graph are equidistant from the point of intersection of the vertical and horizontal
asymptotes
