Lesson Plan: Introduction to Manual
Metal Arc Welding (MMAW)
Lesson Title:
Introduction to Manual Metal Arc Welding
Grade/Level:
Technical/Vocational – Beginner Level
Duration:
2 hours
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Describe the basic principles of MMA welding.
Identify key components of MMA welding equipment.
Demonstrate correct setup and safety procedures.
Perform a basic bead weld on mild steel.
Materials/Equipment Needed:
Welding machines (AC/DC)
Welding rods (e.g., E6013)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): helmet, gloves, jacket, safety boots
Mild steel plates
Electrode holders, clamps, chipping hammer, wire brush
Whiteboard/marker or projector/slides
Lesson Procedure:
1. Activating Prior Knowledge (10 minutes)
Ask:
"What do you know about welding?"
"Can you name types of welding you've heard of?"
"Why do you think welding is important in industries like construction or automotive?"
Let students share, then briefly connect their responses to today’s topic: MMA welding.
2. Introduction to New Material (20 minutes)
Explain what MMAW is: a process where heat is produced by an electric arc between a
covered metal electrode and the base metal.
Show pictures or real tools: welding machine, electrode, ground clamp, etc.
Discuss advantages (portable, simple, low cost) and limitations (slag, manual skill
needed).
3. Demonstration (20 minutes)
Demonstrate how to set up the machine.
Show proper PPE and explain safety protocols.
Demonstrate striking an arc and running a straight bead.
Emphasize posture, distance, and travel speed.
4. Student Practice (Hands-on Activity) (40 minutes)
Students wear full PPE.
Each student practices setting up and performing a basic weld bead under supervision.
Instructor circulates to provide guidance and corrections.
5. Evaluation & Feedback (20 minutes)
Observe students’ technique and weld quality.
Ask oral questions or give a short written quiz:
- What are the parts of an MMA welding setup?
- Name three PPE items and their purpose.
- What problems occur if the arc length is too long?
Assessment Methods:
Observation during practical
Short quiz or Q&A
Student self-reflection or peer feedback
Safety Note:
Reinforce safety throughout — incorrect technique or missing PPE can result in serious
injury.
