Recent news never fails to catch the
readers’ attention. Hence, newest angle of
the story must be emphasized by the
reporter. The more recent the event, the
more interesting it is to the reader.

This element may refer to
geographical nearness as
well as to nearness of
kinship or interest. News
about events and situations
in one's neighborhood or
community are usually
more appealing to the
readers.
Prominence

dramatic actions in news
stories easily catch the
readers’ attention.
Usually, the more
picturesque the
background and the more
dramatic the actions are,
the more appealing the
story is to the reader.
Oddity or
unsualness
This refers to strange
people, unnatural
events, weird objects,
bizarre events, and weird
places
Romance and
Adventure
As always, people are
fascinated by romance,
making it a good element
of news.
Sex
Since the dawn of history,
sex has always interested
man. Stories of sex are
usually related to stories
of romance, marriage,
divorce, and the varied
activities of men with
women.
Progress
Economic growth and
social progress of a
country are interesting to
readers; hence, they are
chronicled step by step in
the newspaper.
Animals
People, throughout
history, have always been
emotionally attached to
animals. For this reason,
stories of animals,
especially those with
unique talents, are good
reading matter because
of their human-interest
value.
Numbers
Any form of numbers
such as sweepstakes
numbers, vital statistics,
election results, scores in
games, casualties,
fatalities, prices of goods,
and ages of women
makes good news.
Emotions
Emotion includes the
various human responses
such as the innate desire
for food, clothing, shelter,
the universal interest in
children, animals, and
nature, and the natural
feeling of love, sympathy,
and generosity, of fear,
hatred, and jealousy.

IN KEEPING THEIR READERS TO
CONTINOUSLY TURNING THOSE PAGES OF A
NEWSPAPER.
