Quadratic Function
Lesson 1
Introduction to Quadratic
Function
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:
Correctly identify a quadratic function;
Correctly identify the values of a, b, and c in
a given quadratic function;
Correctly describe the opening and the
vertex of a parabola; and
Properly model real-life situations using
quadratic functions
Learn about it!
Quadratic Function
Is a second-degree polynomial function in the
form where
Parabola
It is the graph of Quadratic Function (U –
Shape Curve).
The opening of the parabola can be
determined by simply looking at the coefficient .
𝑎>0 , 𝑡h𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑠 𝑂𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑈𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 .
𝑎<0 , 𝑡h𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑠 𝑂𝑝𝑒𝑛𝐷𝑜𝑤𝑛𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 .
The graph of a quadratic function has the following
Vertex
Minimum or maximum point of the parabola.
Axis of symmetry
Line that divides the parabola into two symmetrical
parts
Intercepts
Point(s) of intersection of the parabola and the axes
Some properties of the graph of a
quadratic function are described below.
The vertex is the minimum point if the
parabola opens upward. Otherwise, it is the
maximum point.
The axis of symmetry always passes
through the vertex.
A parabola can have at most two x-
intercepts. It always has a y-intercept.
