Chapter 1 Functions
Lesson 1
Function as
models
Objectives:
• Identify the difference between relations
and functions;
• Represent functions as a table of values,
and graph in the cartesian plane using
Vertical line test; and
Function – is a relation defined as a set of ordered
pairs (x, y), where no two or more distinct ordered
pairs have the same first element (x).
Relation – set of all ordered pairs
Domain – set of all x values
Range – set of all y values
The table shows how relations and
functions are the same and how they
are different.
Relations Functions
A relation is a rule that A function is a relation
relates values from a set of where each element in the
values (called domain) to a domain is related to only
second set of values (called one in the range by some
range). rule.
A relation is a set of ordered A function is a set of
pairs (x, y). ordered pairs (x, y) such
that no two ordered pairs
have the same x-value but
different y-values.
RELATIONS
- a relation is a set of pairs of input and output values.
There are four ways to represent relations.
FUNCTIONS
-a function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) such that no
two ordered pairs have the same x-value but different y-
values.
EXAMPLE: Table of values

Functions and relations as a Table of
Values
Which of the following relations are
functions?
1. f = {(-1, 2), (3, -9), (5, 4), (6, 1)}
2. g = {(2, 8), (2, 7), (-7, 5), (-4, 6)}
3. h = {(-9, 8), (5, 9), (4, -6), (5, 4)}
4. i = {(3, 7), (5, 6), (3, 0), (1, 4)}
5. j = {(1, 3), (3, 1), (4, 2), (2, 4)}
Functions and relations as a Mapping

The Vertical Line Test
A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical
line intersects the graph at most once.

functions?
