Live reviews

  • It's a very special time to be alive, with musicians and artists diminishing boundaries of style and influence to create new sounds of musical expression. This show proved that creation happens in some of the most simplistic and rooted ways. With all three talented musicians bringing their own influences ranging from Funk, Soul, to Thai, melded with the euphoric sense of oneness on this earth, Khruangbin's full atmosphere felt welcoming while still expressing that sense of questioning.

There is much to be said about their moody sound, but the players themselves articulate emotion well with each phrase and break creating openness through each movement. Their ability to change the energy with seamless transitions and consistently on-point drumming is an astounding experience in itself. This trio wastes no time on face-melting solos, but instead focuses on easing the listener into a world of musical conversation across cultures and moods. During "The Infamous Bill" a sudden stop in melody makes room for the sound of percussion to take center stage, with both bassist and guitarist joining in on a glass bottle percussion break. The primal mood then evolves into a funky dance groove reminiscent of the early 70's. When they played "White Gloves", a deeply empathic energy filled the room and a solemn groove thick with feeling cradled the listener in its sound. The feeling persisted until this hammock of auditory energy lifted the crowd back up into funky dance number, keeping the mood light and optimistic.

If the viewer gets too mesmerized by the bassist's flashy fashion and smooth grooves, one may miss the subtleties of layered sound and animated licks that the guitarist never seems to overplay. With the backbone of a solid drummer driving a perfect timed and assertive presence in the foreground, Khruangbin crosses cultural boundaries to bring an accessible sound of Thai-influenced groove to the ready ears of American listeners. Seeing them play in a small, dimly lit club in San Diego, I felt the air of tranquility that comes from a profound change in perspective. And I again realize that the presence of music in the human experience has great potential to heal and connect. Thank you Khruangbin.

  • Khruangbin is a great band. If you are deciding whether to see them in concert, the correct answer is yes. I was able to see them live in 2017 when they were touring with Chicano Batman. This was before they blew up with sold out shows all over the world. The performance at the time was great. It filled me with energy and I got to meet Laura for the first time.

Fast forward to their 2018 Houston show- I am incredibly happy that they are getting the recognition they deserve. I was fortunate enough to get to interview them the day of the concert and I can tell you they are simply great human beings with amazing talent and great music. They care very much about their fans and will make sure you have a good time. You can see that they have so much fun on stage.

The concert itself was fabulous. The lights helped set the mood, and of course Mark, Laura Lee, and DJ did their expected phenomenal job performing. I can tell you this is a one of the best musical groups that have come out of Houston in a long time. Don't make the mistake of missing them at a live show. :)

  • We attended Khruangbin's show last night with a group of about 25 of us, and it was awesome! We've seen Khruangbin play in several cities so it was epic to see them in their element in their hometown, Houston, TX.

Seemed like the energy of the crowd was at an all time high anticipating the incredible show that we were about to experience. Laura Lee's entrance on the stage with the unveiling of a body hugging suit that accentuated her curves enhanced her performance, and Marko's shiny suit sizzled with the light-show in perfect tempo to the music. All the while DJ's cool, calm, and ever-so steady drums created a perfect musical tapestry for the evening.

Having other local Houston artists and friends, Charlie Perez and Will Van Horn accompany Khruangbin on percussion and the steel guitar sweetened the sounds echoing throughout the night and into the morning.

Khruangbin continues to get better and better, and their performances energize the diverse crowds that can't get enough of their music. I feel like we're still on a high from last night!

  • Khruangbin is my new favorite band. I've been listening to their entire catalog on my iPod and watching their live shows online for a long time now and I was really looking forward to the show. They did not disappoint. The venue was excellent. The sound was good and got better and better as the show went on. I loved the set list including their hip hop medley in the middle. Laura Lee and Mark and D.J. were all in sync. The rest of the crowd was also really into them, which made the show even better. The light show was really cool as well. Most importantly, they played their instruments perfectly but with such a soulful feel. Can’t wait to see them again.

  • Having seen Khruangbin beforehand at BST 2016 I had been dying to see them again and above all in a closed venue and my lord was the wait worth it. Everything about the show was immaculate, from Laura's baselines and Marks solo's and DJ's rhythms to all way to their hair styles. I really cannot fault anything whatsoever in their performance, the crowd was captivated from the very start and I was absolutely enthralled as they played my two favorite songs, one from each album, Mr White and Friday Morning.

You have to see them for yourself. I'm already waiting to see them again. Their new album, only released a couple weeks before is stellar.

  • Khruangbin is truly one of my favorite artists, and will likely remain in one of my top 5 for the rest of my life. It is rare for me to feel this connection and complete ease when listening to their music. Seeing them live was truly an experience. Mark was the one who spoke throughout the concert and it was a great experience. He was really able to set the mood, and I got to meet Laura Lee in person. They are really kind people who make such wonderful music. I really recommend you see them live! Especially now that they aren't world famous and you still have the chance to talk with them in person.

    Much love and peace :)

  • Led beforehand by the brilliant Harvey Sutherland, Khruangbin put on a SHOW. Straddling around the stage in unison, the band delivered not only famous hits but a medley of hip hop classics, fused in with Khruangbin's slick style. Led with gorgeous guitar licks, on par drums and bass, the band is wrapping their tour to go record some new material which is very promising. Great vibes, a very warm reception of what has been one of the most refreshing acts of the decade, with a live performance just as good as the records I love to listen to at home. Thank you Khruangbin, thank you.

  • Amazing, amazing, amazing!! They are the most professional easy going artists, they plug in and play like it is so easy and their sound is so unique and perfect.

I recommend anyone who hasn't seen them live to do so and be mesmerised by the skills of Mark, Laura and DJ, who coincidentally, is the coolest drummer. Mark's guitar work is impeccable and well Laura's bass just hits the spot and will be in your head forever more.

Be prepared for chilled out, funky tunes that leave you wanting more!

  • Khruangbin is a cut above every other band out there right now. They deliver sultry, sophisticated tunes that are excellent fodder for mind expansion. They do it with amazing precision and sophistication without even breaking a sweat. The very definition of cool. The chemistry between Mark Speer, Laura Lee, and Donald "DJ" Johnson is nothing less than magical. If you get a chance to see them live--do it before this premium band takes off like a rocket!
