A 16-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter over an alleged altercation that saw a 48-year-old man fatally struck by a car.

Queensland Police allege that around 7.45pm on April 1, the teen chased Warren Eaton onto an intersection at Alfred Street and Mayers Street outside the Raintrees Shopping Centre in Cairns.

Police then allege he pushed and assaulted him on the roadway.

It is then alleged the 16-year-old left Mr Eaton lying on the road where he was fatally struck by a vehicle travelling along the road a short time later.

Paramedics attempted to revive the man but he was declared deceased at the scene.

The teenager was arrested on Monday and charged with manslaughter.

The 16-year-old Manoora boy was refused bail and is due to face Cairns Childrens Court.

Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell said the 16-year-old boy and 48-year-old man were known to each other.

'We are aware that the two are acquaintances,' Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell said.

'The exact details of their relationship are unknown at this time.'

Queensland Police say they are providing support to the driver who hit Mr Eaton and hasn't ruled out more arrests.

'The driver of the vehicle has been questioned and has been fully cooperative with police and at this time has not been charged,' Det Insp Bell said.

'Investigations are still underway in relation to the possibility of other people being involved in this matter.'
