Nine people, including two teenage girls aged 16 and 17, were arrested by detectives today after a man was killed following an early morning town centre confrontation.

The man, aged in his late teens, sustained serious injuries in the incident in the early hours of this morning.

He was rushed to hospital but later died there after medics were unable to save him.

Police said today they had made nine arrests in connection to the incident - but appealed for witnesses to contact them as they continue their investigation.

Officers said men aged 29, 28, 26, 25 and 24 were all today in custody, alongside girls aged 16 and 17 and women aged 27 and 22.

The arrests were made following an incident at around 3.20am in London Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire. The injured man later died at Watford General Hospital. 

The area where the incident took place has been cordoned off and police forensic teams are carrying out a fingertip search of the area.

Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins from the Major Crime Unit said: 'I am appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward. This occurred in the early hours of the morning and was likely to have attracted attention of anyone in the immediate area.

It is understood the police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
