  • A man is on trial in the ACT Supreme Court for allegedly raping his wife
  • He allegedly raped her, spat at her, choked her and threw a condom at her
  • It is alleged that he was angry with her for refusing to cook him dinner
  • But the man said his wife became angry after he refused to cook her dinner

A man allegedly raped and assaulted his wife because he was angry with her for refusing to cook him dinner, a court has heard.

The ACT Supreme Court heard on Thursday that the pair had argued over her refusal to cook for him, and he started throwing things at her, The Canberra Times reported.

The wife claimed he then raped her, spat at her, bit her, choked her and threw a condom in her face.

The woman, who is from China, sent a text message to a friend that night, pleading with her to ‘please help me’.

However, her husband - who is on trial for the alleged rape in April 2014 - provided a different version of events.

He told the court that it was his wife who became angry because he refused to cook her dinner.

‘She ordered me to cook, I did not agree. Then there was an argument,’ he said.

The man said his wife slapped him on his head when he was in their bedroom playing a computer game.

He said he tried to stop her by grabbing her, and she scratched him.

The man claimed they had consensual sex that same night, which was usual for them after an argument.

Under cross-examination, the man denied he believed it was his wife’s job to cook him dinner.

The court was presented with torn underwear the woman had worn on the night of the alleged rape.

The prosecutor said the man had ripped the underwear during the rape.

But the man's lawyer claimed the woman had torn her underwear when she was removing it for consensual sex.

The defence also said the woman had made up the allegations in a bid to obtain an Australian visa.
