It wasn’t an evening that will be last long in the memory; the atmosphere didn’t crackle and the play, at times, was chaotic.
Ultimately, though, none of that mattered to Jurgen Klopp. His first mission in charge of Liverpool has been accomplished and progress through to the Europa League’s last-32 has been secured but how he will wish for the day to arrive when a game at Anfield is contested without nerves fraying.
A James Milner penalty and a thumping strike from Christian Benteke was enough to see off Bordeaux, who had led through Henri Saviet’s indirect free-kick, and so long as they avoid defeat in Sion they will win Group B.

Until next time, folks!
It wasn't the prettiest win but they got there in the end. Liverpool came from behind to beat Bordeaux and in doing so secured qualification to the Europa League's last 32.
The free-kick is whipped in. It looked better fitted for a left foot but Bordeaux go for the right... it's on target... and it's saved by Mignolet! Somewhat theatrical but a save's a save. Palmed it away to safety and Liverpool survive.
Substitution for Liverpool: Origi ON, Ibe OFF.
Elsewhere, Celtic are OUT of the Europa League, having lost 2-1 to Ajax.
The fourth official lied to us... we were told five minutes but apparently it's only three!
An opportunity for Bordeaux here... an ill-timed challenge by Lovren has given the visitors a chance to shoot in the 90th minute.
Contento talks his way into the referee's book. Time for Bordeaux to hoof it towards Liverpool's end and hope for the best.
Wow... elsewhere, Celtic have just gone 2-1 down to Ajax. If it stays like that, the Scottish champions are OUT of the Europa League.
Bordeaux still singing. Their supporters have been superb tonight. Liverpool still clinging on to their slender lead. Minutes remaining.
Almost! A delicate ball over the top leads to a sublime touch from substitute Maurice-Belay but, just as he was about to unleash his shot, Kolo Toure makes the interception.
Do Bordeaux have one last attack in them? Been a comfortable half for a dodgy-looking Mignolet, this...
Liverpool still throwing bodies forward as we enter the final 10 minutes. Don't want to get too vulnerable on the break, though, as an animated Klopp yells instructions.
A tasty corner from Ibe dips but no Liverpool players are in the pocket of space it found. Saivet then fancies his chances from distance... but it's wild. That's a goal-kick.
Milner is slightly greedy as he shoots instead of crossing from a tight angle. It goes out for a goal-kick and we'll see another substitution for Liverpool.
Substitution for Liverpool: Lallana ON, Firmino OFF.
A comedy moment as the crowd urge Mignolet to get rid of the ball. Don't worry folks, by my watch he only held it for five seconds this time. Phew.
Bordeaux struggling to escape their own half at the moment - with possession at least.
Just 20 minutes to go.
Liverpool been looking the likelier to score but still holding a slender lead. Time for Klopp to make a change.
Substitution for Liverpool: Can ON. Allen OFF
Moreno falls to the ground. He's taken an accidental knee to his lower back. Ouch.
Bordeaux not making it easy for Liverpool. They're pressing.
Ibe receives an avoidable yellow card. He barges his marker in the back, giving away a free-kick, then boots the ball away. Silly.
It does, though, lead to a colourful chant from The Kop just for the referee.
Bordeaux are convinced they should have a penalty. A corner is whipped in and the ball strikes Benteke's hands... it wasn't deliberate, but still. Referee gives a corner as a consolation to the complaining Bordeaux players. Lucky boy, Benteke.
Ibe gets through... he goes for glory... plenty of power... but no accuracy. Saved by Carrasso and Bordeaux survive. They're still in this, the plucky Frenchmen!
Ball is in the back of the net! A cross by Milner found Benteke in the box and he made no mistake... but it's ruled out! It can't be for offside... a foul, maybe? The suggestion is he tripped Sane in the build-up to the goal... but it was well disguised.
This Bordeaux team are there for the taking. Mistakes galore, no pressing, poor passing... so far, though, they're still in this. Liverpool searching for a third goal.
Liverpool pressing, looking for that third goal to kill this tie. Firmino gets behind and cuts it back to Benteke, whose shot is horrendous.
The striker was leaning too far back and that ball belongs to The Kop now.
More poor passing from Firmino. That was occurring continuously in the first half and he hasn't started the second much better.
No changes by either side.
The referee thought so and it allowed Liverpool to equalise before taking the lead.
The ball is played into Benteke, whose first touch takes him away from his marker Yambere. It sets him up perfectly to strike from 20 yards... he does... and it's in!
That's 2-1!
Just a minute to be added and Liverpool are pressing.
Ironic cheers from the crowd as Mignolet gets the ball and takes no time at all to distribute it. They'll be counting out loud for him next...
Boring, boring Milner? No way! He sends the goalkeeper the wrong way and it's 1-1.
Benteke bundled over in the box. Sane the culprit. Referee points to the spot. Bit of a debate over who will take it... but Milner wins the argument.
That is an astonishingly sweet hit by Henri Saivet, in from the moment he swished that right foot around the knockback.
How often do you see this!?
Mignolet timed out! The Liverpool goalkeeper had hold of the ball but for far longer than the allotted six seconds. In fact, it was more than 20 seconds!
Free-kick inside the box to Bordeaux... and it's in! Saivet finds the top-left corner!
That was entirely avoidable. Poor, poor, poor from Mignolet. As for the visitors, that was Bordeaux's first-ever goal in England.
This game - he says at his peril - needs livening up. Howay Klopp, work your magic.
The ball is in the net... but Benteke's joy is cut short. Ibe's through-ball led to a cute finish but the goal was rightly chalked off for offside. They're getting closer...
Kolo Toure! Keepy-uppies and volleying wide! Time to move him in midfield, as at the weekend? Maybe not...
Slightly desperate defending from Bordeaux, and eventually it drops to Kolo Toure. Cries of 'shoot' from the Liverpool faithful help the blood rush to his head and he goes for it!
Wide! My word. Toure having a shot?! You heard it here first.
Allen finds himself in space. He's about 25 yards out... he's not going to, is he? Ah yes, he shoots, it's tame and it's wide from the midfielder, who is sporting a new beard...
Then, an inch-perfect cross by Ibe almost finds Benteke. Could the striker have done more? He looks frustrated with himself as it trickles wide, slightly ahead of him.
A ball over the top for Benteke. His first touch - off his chest - is excellent. His second - on the volley - is not. Wide. It was promising play by the striker, though.
Superb support from the Bordeaux fans. All you can hear is their constant singing.
Questionable defending from Liverpool as Bordeaux almost break through. First, an out-of-the-box header by Mignolet is, to be frank, abysmal. Then, the home side are perhaps too casual as Bordeaux press - Lucas even trying a nutmeg in his own box. Madness.
Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan at Anfield: 'Big fan of Lucas nutmegging an attacker inside his own box; not so much of Mignolet's hopeless inability to make any sort of decision out of his comfort zone. A major let-off.'
Benteke making plenty of runs through the centre, forever looking to get on the end of crosses from either wing.
A ball over the top finds Firmino, who tries to chest it down. Almost... but not quite. The defenders manage to get back in time and the chance goes begging.
Weather update from Michael Owen on BT Sport commentary: 'Not too much rain. Not too much wind either. Perfect conditions.'
A poor touch from Firmino gives away possession but Liverpool look keen to win it back when aren't on the ball. The Brazilian then has a sniff of goal... but scuffs his shot.
Elsewhere, Celtic have just taken the lead against Ajax.
Bordeaux have played five matches in England across the years. They've lost them all and haven't scored either. They're also currently 13th in Ligue 1.
Steady start from both teams. Liverpool comfortable in possession...
A win will take Liverpool through. Let's see if they can get qualification out of the way.
About 1,000 away fans have made the trip from Bordeaux.
Daniel Sturridge's injury nightmare has struck again with a foot problem stopping him lining up in Thursday's Europa League clash.
The England international, who has only just recovered from a knee injury, was in line to start against French side Bordeaux at Anfield.
It is not yet known how serious the issue is but Sturridge did not arrive with the rest of Liverpool’s squad and will now face more treatment.
That result for Rubin Kazan could prove very profitable for Liverpool, who will top the group with three points tonight and go to Sion in December needing a point to end as a knockout seed. Quite staggering really, given they drew each of the first three.
So, no Daniel Sturridge then - prolonging his absence into a seventh week.
Having said that, if Klopp's front three play as they did at Manchester City this should be a routine win. He says...
Liverpool: Mignolet, Clyne, Toure, Lovren, Moreno, Milner, Lucas, Allen, Ibe, Benteke, Firmino
Subs: Bogdan, Lallana, Can, Origi, Brannagan, Skrtel, Randall
Bordeaux: Carasso, Biyogo Poko, Sane, Yambere, Contento, Plasil, Chantome, Saivet, Rolan, Crivelli, Jussie
Subs: Prior, Traore, Diabate, Maurice-Belay, Guilbert, Poundje, Ounas
Referee: Alon Yefet (Israel)
