First look: The BFG teaser trailer begins by focusing on central character Sophie in a dimly lit orphanage dormitory
Fright night! The BFG's hand reaches in to grab the girl
The trailer begins by focusing on Sophie in the dimly lit dormitory of the orphanage where she lives.
'It was the witching hour when the boogeyman comes out, when people go missing,' the young girl says, as a shadow of a huge figure appears at the window.
'The girls say the witching hour arrives at midnight. I think it comes at three in the morning, when I’m the only one left awake. Like always. Like now.'
Mysterious: Viewers see just The BFG's eyes and hand in the two-minute clip
Afraid: Sophie runs and hides under the covers after she is spotted by the giant
Bookworm: The teaser starts out with the protagonist reading under the covers with a torch
Sophie is then shown reading a book with a torch under the cover of a blanket, but she looks up when she hears a clatter outside.
'Never get out of bed. Never go to the window. Never look behind the curtain,' she says, as she does those three exact things.
Outside, Sophie sees a group of cats yowling after a metal trash can gets knocked over, and stares on in shock as a large hand grabs it and pulls it out of sight.
What's that?: While the other girls are fast asleep, Sophie hears a clatter outside and goes to investigate
'Never get out of bed. Never go to the window. Never look behind the curtain,' she says, as she does those three exact things
Scary: Sophie talks about the witching hour, and is seen locking windows and doors before hearing the noise outside
We are then shown just the BFG's eyes as he looks up at Sophie, who can't help but gasp.
Viewers then see the young girl hurrying back to her bed, where she hides under the covers, as the hooded figure of the giant strides over to the orphanage window.
The BFG then reaches a huge hand through the window, and the scene cuts just as he is about to snatch up Sophie.
Giant hand: The young girl sees a trash can getting knocked over, before a huge hand reaches in and pulls it out of sight
Shocked: Sophie can't believe it when a hooded figure emerges from the darkness
Uh oh: The giant looks up and spots Sophie, and she can't help but gasp
The teaser trailer ends with the little girl telling the audience: 'And that is where our story begins.'
Ruby Barnhill, 11, is taking on the role of Sophie, while Mark Rylance is portraying The BFG.
The film also stars Bill Hader as a giant, Penelope Wilton as The Queen (based on Elizabeth II), and Rebecca Hall as Mary, the Queen's maid.
Time to run: We then see the child hurrying back inside as The BFG approaches
Time to hide: Sophie crawls under the covers of her bed and remains still, hoping the giant will go away
They're not all friendly: The girl is unsurprisingly terrified of the giant - because in the book, they eat children
The project is Disney's first-ever Spielberg-directed film.
Spielberg previously said: 'In more than 40 years of making movies, I have been on the producing end of a number of films for The Walt Disney Company, but never as a director.
'It is a special joy to be in the director's chair as we start The BFG, alongside my long-time friends and film collaborators Kathy Kennedy, who introduced me to this project, Frank Marshall and Melissa Mathison.
Spooky: The giant's hand approaches and the scene cuts just as it is about to snatch up Sophie
Coming soon: The BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg, is set for release on July 1, 2016
'Together with them and Disney, there are many reasons why I am so excited about this joint venture.'
This is the second film adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl tale, first published in 1982, and the first live-action version.
