Trudeau says White House state dinner a sign of better ties
TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says U.S.-Canada relations are better than they have been in a long time and pointed to an upcoming state dinner at the White House.
Trudeau said Wednesday the state dinner will be the first with a Canadian prime minister in nearly 20 years. The White House has not made an announcement but President Obama has said he will host Trudeau early next year.
Trudeau made the remarks when asked about his decision to remove Canada's six fighter jets from the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State group.
Trudeau says allies understand Canada will step up military training instead. Canada has had 69 special forces soldiers in Iraq since last year.
