Reds place closer Iglesias on DL, activate Lorenzen
The Cincinnati Reds had one reliever activated off the disabled list Wednesday, only to lose two more to injury.
Right-hander Michael Lorenzen rejoined the team for the first time this season after suffering a muscle strain in his throwing shoulder during spring training. Meanwhile, Cincinnati placed right-handers Raisel Iglesias (sore left biceps) and Austin Brice (back) on the 10-day disabled list.
Right-hander Tanner Rainey was recalled from the Triple-A Louisville to complete the roster shuffle.
Iglesias, 28, represents the biggest name of the bunch as the team's closer. He has a 2.08 ERA and eight saves in 20 outings this season, striking out 27 batters in 21 2/3 innings.
Iglesias suffered a blown save in his last outing against the Chicago Cub on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits in an inning.
"I have no idea how I did it," Iglesias told reporters of the injury. "I don't know if it was pitching or sleeping. One day it was there.
"Before Sunday, everything was fine. I could pitch with the pain. But after Sunday, I said I don't want to go out there and pitch and hurt the team."
With Iglesias out, interim manager Jim Riggleman indicated he would be willing to use multiple relievers in save situations, including Lorenzen, who can pitch multiple innings after being used as a starter this spring. Lorenzen, 26, has a 4.57 ERA in 132 games (21 starts) in his three years in the majors.
Brice, 25, has a 4.68 ERA in 21 games this season. Rainey, 25, has appeared in two games with Cincinnati, allowing seven runs in two innings.
