Proposing upmerge to Category:Allotropy. Currently that parent is "Articles giving an overview of allotropy or of the allotropes of particular elements. For articles about specific allotropes, see the subcategory Category:Allotropes." But there can be allotropy of non-elements (we already have File:Mercury iodide.jpg in that parent). And that parent has files that are about several allotropes of an element together (example: File:PhosphorusAllotropes.svg), but per the description such a file does not go in the element's subcats of Category:Allotropes, which seems conceptually incorrect. I don't think we are likely to have other subcats of this parent so I don't see the use of this intermediate container cat. DMacks (talk) 05:12, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- Per IUPAC, "allotropes" are specifically forms of individual elements, not compounds, so I removed that file from this cat. DMacks (talk) 05:26, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

We don't combine two different things in categories (streets and buildings). I think the files here could be moved to just a buildings category, because the streets shown aren't a major part of the images. Auntof6 (talk) 10:00, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- Fine to me. When I create the "Streets and buildings in Torres Vedras" category, there wasn´t a "Buildings in Torres Vedras" category, which was created 4 days later, and I find that there are similar (Streets and buildings in) categories in Commons. But since the Buildings category was created, I agree to change/move the "Streets and buildings in Torres Vedras" to only "Streets in Torres Vedras". GualdimG (talk) 11:00, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

This is a useless category and I propose deletion. There is very little that distinguishes an air-conditioned vehicle from a non-air-conditioned one. It would be much more useful to have a categories for the actual air-conditioning units/equipment in vehicles (such as already exist for cars and aircraft). P 1 9 9 ✉ 16:44, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Agreed. Something like Category:Air-conditioners in vehicles would make sense, but this is not a useful categorization of images. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:16, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- @P199 and Themightyquill: rename is better than delete, to Category:Air conditioners in vehicles (no '-' per parent Category:Air conditioners) or Category:Air conditioning in vehicles. This should only be for files depicting the A/C aspect of vehicles, not for a collection of vehicle categories that just happen to include A/C in their design. Josh (talk) 00:27, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner: Do we actually have any images like you describe? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:26, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Themightyquill: Category:Automobile air conditioners is mostly files depicting the air conditioning systems of cars, and certainly not a place for the categories of all cars which have A/C. Josh (talk) 08:33, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- So then maybe Category:Vehicle air conditioners between Category:Air conditioners and Category:Automobile air conditioners ? That is, if we have images of air conditioners in vehicles which are not automobiles? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:37, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I fully agree with the foregoing discussion. In fact, that can be implemented irregardless of whatever the outcome is of this discussion. But a rename/redirect is not in order, because "Air-conditioned vehicles" is not the same as "Air conditioners in vehicles". Moreover, it is obvious that the collection of images in the category under discussion would not belong in "Air conditioners in vehicles". But if Josh really wants a redirect, then so be it, no big deal. --P 1 9 9 ✉ 13:33, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

- The same thing we do with every other category of "in Latin America" and "in the Caribbean". In this case, they are already in Category:Demonstrations and protests by region so it's also COM:OVERCAT. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:31, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Moreover, I'm not sure Category:Demonstrations and protests in Latin America needs to exist at all, since it also just subcategorizes by countries, rather than describing Latin-America-wide demonstrations or protests. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:34, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Badly named category as per MOS:TITLE : prepositions containing four letters or fewer (as, in, of, on, to, for, from, into, like, over, with, upon, etc.) are not capitalized, unless they are the first or last word of a title (which is not the case of this band). They're similar categories like System of a Down, Theory of a Deadman or Cats on Trees which do not use any capitalization, even they are sometimes shortened as well using a full capitalization (SOAD for System of a Down). Synthwave.94 (talk) 19:56, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

- Have a look here Category talk:Dead Cats On Mopeds - ZMF 2015 nearly the same discussion with a decision. "Dead Cats On Mopeds" is fine.
- Synthwave.94 way to work is nearly vandalism like. Is changing names of Categories removing information that may clarify the category. Today he removed the Information (Rapper) from the category "Frauenarzt (Rapper)" now the medical profession gynecologist and the musician are using the same german category name. when he changes category names, he does not fix the relations in the languages, therefore now a lot of wikis are poniting to nowhere. I don't think that this is very helpfull. His primarly idea seems to impress his set of en:wp rules to commons, misunderstanding that commons is a multilanguage project, with a lot of facets

--Jörgens.Mi Talk 22:12, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Huntster: Incorrect, the en.wiki Manual of Style (including capitalization) is applied on Commons as well, as you can see on these few requests : Ancient Egyptian Beer industry, Catherine yronwode, Tacos al Pastor, Roof Garden and many others I'm not going to mention here. You write Korn and not KoЯn, Babymetal and not BABYMETAL, etc. The same consistency should therefore be applied to similar categories, and Dead Cats on Mopeds is not an exception to the rule. The fact the band decided to stylize it as "Dead Cats On Mopeds" is completly irrelevant here. Synthwave.94 (talk) 23:46, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Joergens.mi: No other Commons category bears this name, and Commons categories should be in English, not in German. Synthwave.94 (talk) 23:46, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- Synthwave.94, I have no idea what you're referring to, or how it relates to my statement that the English Wikipedia Manual of Style does not have bearing here, just as what we do on Commons has no bearing on what en.wiki does. — Huntster (t @ c) 01:57, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Synthwave.94: "Commons categories should be in English, not in German.", that's funny, your own link proves you wrong. Too easy. And we don't use KoЯn because w:en:Korn doesn't use that Russian character anyway. If they did, their name would be pronounced as "Koyan". It's a mirrored R, not a Я. If anyone uses a triangle in their name, we also won't include a ▸ in the category name. Not part of the alphabet. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:52, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: It's not used because it's a stylization, and it's the same thing for Dead Cats on Mopeds stylized as Dead Cats On Mopeds and many other similar examples which were already cited so far. Synthwave.94 (talk) 00:16, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Synthwave.94: To clarify: Yes, standard rules of grammar on commons, particularly for general categories, but that doesn't mean we need to follow the speific rules of en.wiki MOS. They didn't come up with rules about capitalization. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:50, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Joergens.mi: As far as I can see, Category:Frauenarzt (Rapper) was moved to Category:Frauenarzt (rapper), which is entirely appropriate. Disamibuation in parenthesis don't need to be capitalized - it's not part of the name. Please don't accuse others of vandalism just because you disagree with their behaviour. There's absolutely nothing to indicate Synthwave is consciously trying to make commons worse. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:54, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Themightyquill: with this categorisation it is ok. I didn't accuse him to to vandalism, but I said "is nearly vandalism like" He did several changes which are really not helpfull, especially if he didn't speak the according language. when you have a look in his change records:

If you like the rules, you personally can follow it, but please don't urge other people to follow, even by renaming categories without knowing the background. It is quite common to add the event in round braces in the german wikipedia and there fore we use it on commons. But we would never go around an change catagories from - xxxx to (xxx). There is no need for. There are over 45.000 pages with scans where the year are in round braces and there is no need for changing this. I would never get the idea to force other user to obey to de.wiki rules in a multi language project, even when I have problems with the names of pictures named in Chinese, Hiragana, russian or thai.
The idea with band and musical group is a nice one. I'll try in the future to use musical group instead of band because of the good arguments of user:Blackcat especially with ambiguous groups. But I won't change it for the past (and I'm participatiting Wikipedia:Festivalsommer) --Jörgens.Mi Talk 15:27, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- I think I agree with musical group, in part because not all musical groups are bands. I don't think I would call a choir a band. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:25, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
I would generally stick to the stylization of the source. Perhaps some exception for names that are not abbreviations with more than five or six consecutive capital lettters. So in this case, Dead Cats On Mopeds are fine. I mean, they're dead, but their name is fine. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:25, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: The "stylization of the source" is unreliable, considering they don't necessarly follow guidelines/policies. That's the case for Cats on Trees on the de.wiki, which was previously named Cats On Trees. You can even notice the user who renamed the page cited WP:NK, and not a personal choice. I can even cite WP:NK as a valid reason to move Dead Cats On Mopeds to Dead Cats on Mopeds, considering it's a German band that should be following guidelines/policies from the de.wiki. I think it is redundant cat. Let it be only category:Animations of text. Same problem with category:Animations without text Estopedist1 (talk) 08:16, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- What about an animation which depicts text but who's subject is not text? For instance, most books in English use Latin script but are not books about Latin script.
- For example, what if Bugs Bunny is outside a diner whose window sign reads "DINER"? Is that an animation of a rabbit or is it an animation of text? If it is an animation of text, then why is there a rabbit (and vice versus)? Hyacinth (talk) 08:24, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

"(I)" is a non-intuitive disambiguation token (we also have Category:Jean Marot that has no DAB token). Since this one already has a DAB token, how about using "(architect)" instead (2 of 4 wiki use that) as a more descriptive term. The Creator:Jean Marot (I) page gives "Jean Marot the Elder" as an alt name, but the other Jean Marot is 150 years older, so again a profession is a better identiy than anything about chronology. I don't know if it's worth emphasizing who the other person is, as (poet) rather than the plain name (frwiki has them at fr:Jean Marot (poète) but the other wikis do not have a DAB token for this person). Two of the three subcats are more properly subcats of that third one (Category:Disulfur and Category:Trisulfur are actually allotropes of sulfur, not sister-cats of Category:Allotropes of sulfur). The word "forms" is vague, whereas "en:allotropes" is well-defined, and "Allotropes of..." seems to be the standard pattern for individual elemental subcats of Category:Allotropy. - I agree, and we should do the same with Category:Sunday Morning. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:52, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
- Maybe this one was intended to be a proper noun but that's unlikely given it was created in 2012 while the lower case one was only created a few weeks ago. I think we need to Delete both and the other categories. If kept this one should be redirected to the lower case version since "morning" isn't a proper noun unlike Category:Duck Sauce, while Category:Duck sauce also isn't. Like the seasons categories this seems to be w:WP:TRIVIALCAT since unless the topic is strongly associated with time, such as events that specifically take place in the morning or things to do with light at different times of the day it doesn't seem relevant per Auntof. @Estopedist1: I think both the original as well as category:Uncategorized illustrations are unnecessary and could be counter-productive. These files should simply be placed in Category:Illustrations, otherwise they remain hidden in this maintenance category. Categories like this may seem like a good way to help clean up a big category, but really it is just hiding the mess instead of dealing with it and ultimately it will be longer before these files are properly sorted and made use of. | ||||

Due to regional variation, vests is ambiguous (see en:Waistcoat) and redundant with Category:Waistcoats and Category:Tank tops. Convert to disambiguation page? Themightyquill (talk) 13:30, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Themightyquill: Agreed, not seeing any opposition, so go ahead with it. Josh (talk) 18:31, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
- Disagree; leave as is. The existing category seems to be an umbrella for various kinds of vests (with well over a dozen subcategories), and waistcoats are only a single subcategory of that (namely, a specific type of fitted vest). It seems fine as is, and otherwise the many regional types of vests are not properly waistcoats and should not be categorized as such. Morgan Riley (talk) 14:28, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- A clear definition would be very helpful AND correct links to Wikidata (and so to the Wikipedias). Because now the Wikidata link for Vests is to Waistcoat in EN-Wikipedia (a redirect from Vest), while in Commons Waistcoats is a subcategory of Vests. So my question is: what is the difference between Vest and Waistcoat? And can a waistcoat have sleeves as well, see media in Category:Knitted waistcoats? JopkeB (talk) 08:14, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
- @JopkeB: I believe a waistcoat is universally a sleeveless piece of formal wear, part of a 3-piece suit. Vest, however, depends where you are. In North American english, it is a synonym for waistcoat, but also be lifevests and other Category:Protective vests and any really kind of sleeveless clothing going over a shirt like Category:Down vests. In British English, it seems vest is synonymous with Category:Tank tops (i.e. sleeveless clothing usually going under a shirt or worn as a shirt. My original proposal is impractical - it's easy to separate waistcoats from tank tops, but I'm not sure how to handle things like Category:Down vests which are neither.- Themightyquill (talk) 07:23, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
My conclusions for Commons, based on the answers and remarks of @Themightyquill: and @Morgan Riley: (and a little bit of EN-Wikipedia):
- There is no need anymore to convert Category:Vests into a disambiguation page.
- Vest is a sleeveless, upper-body piece of clothing and it is usually worn over a shirt and below a coat. "Vest" is the overall, umbrella concept. This should be the parent category. The other types of vests are subcategories of "Vests", like: Down vests (subcategory of Vests by material), Waistcoats, Sweater vests and Protective vests.
- A "Waistcoat" is a special type of vest: a formal vest, usually part of a 3-piece suit.
- A contemporary waistcoat can not have sleeves and is chic. But 16th- and 17th-century waistcoats can, so Category:Knitted waistcoats is a not bad name.
The three photos show Knitted cardigans (two) and Knitted sweaters (one). This category and its files need attention. (I took care of it, I think it has been solved. JopkeB, 12-4-2021.)
- A contemporary waistcoat can not have sleeves and is chic. But 16th- and 17th-century waistcoats can, so Category:Knitted waistcoats is a not bad name.
- There is not yet a final conclusion about "Tank top". In North American English and British English it has different meanings. My preferations (as a not native English speaker) for Commons: let's follow the EN-Wikipedia and the current images in Category:Tank tops:
- "Tank top" = a sleeveless shirt. If I look at the pictures in Category:Tank tops, I conclude: For sporters it is a part of their sports outfit, for others it might be an outerwear on hot days. You wear it directly on your skin. It is no subcategory of "Vest".
- "Sweater vest" = a sleeveless sweater. You wear it the same way as other vests: over a shirt (or another, thin, sweater). This is a subcategory of "Vest".
- Wikidata (and perhaps EN-Wikipedia) should be adjusted after we have reached a final conclusion.
Please add, correct and/or (dis) agree with these conclusions, so that we can reach an overall conclusion and close this discussion. JopkeB (talk) 08:32, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- Since there was no reaction for over a month, I assume that I can close this discussion and implement the conclusions. JopkeB (talk) 09:36, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
Conclusions: see 1-5 above, including suggestion 4. I have added definitions to the categories involved and adjusted several Wikidata items; there were no changes in the links to parent categories. JopkeB (talk) 09:53, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

- Is it better under Category:Groups of objects or under Category:Sets ? - Themightyquill (talk) 09:02, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Jochen Burghardt and Themightyquill: Keep Sets and groups are not equal. Sets are a group which is defined. Category:Groups of numbers would be for any media depicting a collection of numbers, regardless of whether they are a defined set. Defined sets of numbers can be sorted into Category:Sets of numbers. Josh (talk) 00:22, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner: Can you explain how that separation would work in practice? What counts as a set vs a collection? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:27, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Themightyquill: We currently have Category:Groups and Category:Sets, and so the same logic used to determine categorization between these two would apply to Category:Groups of numbers and Category:Sets of numbers. To be a set, there must be a definition of the set (i.e. there would be some criteria for inclusion) and the members must all meet that criteria. Theoretically, any group could be defined as a set, should such definition be laid out and the criteria for membership be met, however, realistically we can apply notability to set definitions. Simply taking an image of seemingly random numbers and defining it as 'numbers that Josh likes' is not going to meet this threshold. I really don't know how important it is for us to divide sets and groups, but so long as we do so at the parent level, it would seem the same logic should apply to the 'of numbers' children. Josh (talk) 08:56, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

...and various subcategories
We have "LGBT Pride" categories, "Gay Pride" categories", and others. These names are confusingly inconsistent, and in some cases outdated ("Birmingham Gay Pride" was the name in use in 2012; the 2019 event was branded simply "Birmingham Pride").
I defer to the community to decide what on an up-to-date, inclusive, and hopefully future-proof name, that can be applied to all such categories (except those about individual past events with more specific names). - No action now, request close to this discussion These various Wikipedia category names reflect the lack of consistency and frequent changes in real world names. - Comment: I would request that the pride parade category not be redirected to this category. Pride parades are often part of the larger pride festivities, for example we have Helsinki Pride (the whole week-long event in whatever year with its multiple events, including the pride parade) -> Helsinki Pride 2019 (the event in 2019) -> Helsinki Pride Parade 2019 (just the pride parade in 2019). Because of the redirect, I cannot back-categorize -> Pride Parades in 2019 and Pride Parades in Finland -> Pride Parades. I find this annoying. -Yupik (talk) 07:47, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
