Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer visits his sister's grave to share a 'quiet moment' during Christmas period

The brother of the late Princess Diana, Charles Spencer, has shared a solemn post visiting his sister's grave over the Christmas period.

The 9th Earl Spencer, 60, took to social media on December 24 to share a 'quiet moment' at his younger sister's resting place at Althorp House - the home where the two grew up together.

Charles shared a picture of a grand black bench perched under her memorial, writing that it was the perfect spot to remember his younger sister, who died in 1997 aged 36.

'My favourite bench - good place to sit on Christmas Eve during a quiet moment,' he captioned the photo, revealing the black bench beneath a portrait of Diana.

Adding a second picture to his Instagram story, Charles shared a pensive snap of Oval Lake, showing the shadows of the leaf barren trees bearing down over the water.

Princess Diana is buried on a island in the middle of the lake, which is accessible only by boat to close friends and family.

She had initially been planned to be buried at a vault in Great Brington where generations of Spencers have historically been laid to rest.

But fearing for her privacy, even in death, Charles elected to change her final resting spot to Althorp House, where the pair spent many happy years growing up.

Writing in his book, Althorp: The Story of an English House, he explained that the remote location for her burial was 'entirely intentional'.

He said the lake 'a buffer against the interventions of the insane and goulish, the thick mud presenting a further line of defence.'

The Northamptonshire estate, which boasts more than 13,000 acres, is open for tourists to visit during the summer months but then closes over winter.

Charles previously revealed that he visits the grave of his sister 'pretty much every day' and that she is still 'very' alive in his memory.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier this year, the author said he pays a visit to Diana nearly daily, despite it being 27-years since her passing.

He acknowledged that nearly all of viewer's watching would likely have their own set of trauma to battle -  'And, like everyone else, you sort of get used to it without it ever going away'

Earlier in the festive season and prior to the heartfelt post, Charles had made a post revealing the festive transformation Althorp underwent ahead of Christmas.

In an Instagram post, the Earl Spencer revealed a huge towering Christmas tree, laced with snow white lights and stylish red baubles.

'Happy Christmas to you, from @althorphouse,' he wrote.

It comes after the author revealed he was 'finally with the right woman', confirming his relationship with archaeologist Cat Jarman.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said: 'Cat Jarman, who is my partner now actually, she's a brilliant archaeologist.

'She is Nordic Person of the Year 2024 which is usually handed out to someone like Sven-Goran Eriksson or a composer or something. You have to be respected throughout all Scandinavian and Nordic countries.'

Cat, 42, who is separated from her husband, has been helping Earl Spencer unearth a Roman villa in Althorp, the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire.

Since 2023, Charles and Cat have co-hosted The Rabbit Hole Detective, which is a historical podcast.

Charles and Cat first sparked romance rumours in June, after they were spotted enjoying a theatre trip in London.
