In a crucial Autumn Statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt drew battle lines for a long election struggle by starting to reduce the eye-watering burden on businesses and families. Insisting that ministers have had chosen to 'reject big government, high spending and high tax', Mr Hunt gave 28million working Brits a boon by cutting the main national insurance rate from 12 per cent to 10 per cent, starting in January. It will save a worker on a £35,000 salary £450 a year. NICs are also being slashed for the self-employed with Class 2 contributions abolished and Class 4 reduced - together helping another two million workers to the tune of £350 each. Meanwhile, a huge £10billion-a-year tax break for firms will be made permanent, with Mr Hunt saying it is the 'largest in modern British history'. The reductions were described as the 'biggest package of tax cuts to be implemented since the 1980s', when Nigel Lawson was in No11. They are equivalent to roughly 0.7 per cent of GDP. Conservative MPs were delighted with the announcements, although some urged the government to go further at the pre-election Budget in the Spring. However, the Chancellor's claim to be returning to a lower tax platform was thrown into doubt by the Treasury watchdog, which pointed out that the stealth raid from freezing income tax and NICs thresholds will dwarf the £20billion of cuts....read
