It's been a whirlwind return to Premier League action for 2025 and we have another game that has just got underway as Brighton host Arsenal in the late kick-off.

Well the goals certainly flew in during the second-half and while there's not been loads of change in league positions, things are certainly getting tighter at both ends of the table.

Man City's dominant win puts them onto 34 points and while much has been made of their run of form, they are only five points behind Arsenal in second who play tonight.

Bournemouth are right behind the champions as they climb into seventh, while Brentford's first away win of the season moves them onto 27 points.

Chelsea remain fourth after a point at Selhurst Park but are now winless in four, while Crystal Palace are now just one point behind Manchester United.

Everton sit just two points above the relegation zone after losing at the Vitality and it's more misery for Southampton who remain on six points.

It's FIVE for Brentford as they wrap up a first away win of the season and Ramsdale is justifiably fuming at his defence. There's many reasons why Southampton are bottom of the table and they've all been on show today.

It's four for Brentford and the remaining Southampton fans are either booing or walking. Brentford have been brilliant, Saints have been dreadful.

Everton have been really poor this game but momentarily threaten through Doucoure as he shoots from range only for his effort to drift wide. The Toffees don't deserve anything from this game with how they have played this afternoon.

Chelsea had so many chances in the first-half to put this game to bed, they didn't take them, and now have been made to pay as Jean-Philipe Mateta scores a tap-in.

It was brilliant play from Eze to create the chance and Selhurst Park is roaring now.

Bournemouth finally break the deadlock and what a way to do it.

Milos Kerkez fizzes the ball from the left flank and David Brooks meets it first time with the inside of his boot to volley home.

The Vitality Stadium erupts, more out of relief than anything else. They had had seven shots on target before this one finally rung true.

Leicester try to pass the ball around their defence and aren't alert to the pace of Leon Bailey who steals possession and finishes tidly. Villa back in front.

City make a few subs and Kyle Walker makes a simple mistake just moments after being introudced that gives West Ham a chance.

A few passes later and Fulkrug drives a low shot past Ortega that gives West Ham the smallest glimmer of hope.

After van den Berg's goal was disallowed, the atmosphere was improved for a few minutes inside St Mary's as Juric's side began to commit more players forward in search of the equaliser.

But those two goals from Mbuemo have put the game our of sight and the home fans are streaming out of the exits.

This ia a beautiful goal from the Brentford dangerman who runs onto a cute pass from Wissa and firest his effort past Ramsdale from a cute angle. A first away win of the season for the Bees is coming.

I can't keep up with all of this because it seems like every team fancies scoring at nearly the exact same time! Anyway, Leicester find themselves level as Martinez spills an initial shot into Mavididi's path who fires into an open net.

It's not been the most eyecatching of games at Villa Park this afternoon but Ross Barkley has just added some dynamite to the ocassion with a stunning strike that leaves the Leicester goalkeeper rooted!

West Ham are the creators of their own downfall as some really sloppy passing in defence gives De Bruyne the chance to steal the ball, he then has Haaland and Foden either side of him, opts for the latter and it's a simple finish for the latter. Man City are well and truly looking like they are back!

The Bees thought they had scored a second but it's been disallowed for some rough grabbing in the box when the corner delivery came in. Southamtpon have been handed a lifeline to try and get back into this but they have been terrible so far.

It's three and it's Haaland again as he latches onto a pass and dinks his shot over Areola who perhaps went to ground slightly earlier than he should have. This is the City we have become used to under Guardiola.

What a season Jordan Pickford is having and he makes another stunning save to deny Semenyo's driven shot from range.

That's his sixth save of the game already! Bournemouth are knocking on the door.

Oh no how has he missed that! It should be 1-1 at Selhurst Park and I can't believe it isn't as Eze drags his cutback wide from close range and a collective sigh echoes around the ground. Must do better with those chances.

Well it's not been the craziest first weekend of Premier League action to kickstart 2025, but there is plenty of narratives being spun.

Man City are looking like they could slowly be getting back to their best, Brentford are on-track for a first away win of the season, Chelsea are ahead as they bid to find a first win in two games, while it's goalless at Bournemouth v Everton and Aston Villa v Leicester.

There has been lots of booing from the home stands throughout the first half and a pronounced burst just now as Stuart Attwell blew for half time.

This has been fair too comfortable for Thomas Frank's side, who have the worst away record in the division.

Familiar feel to this for Chelsea. So many chances, and yet they've only scored once.

They really need to up their ruthlessness. Nicolas Jackson has just been the latest to muck up a big opportunity, firing wide with the outside of his boot after a fine pass in behind by Cole Palmer. 

Savinho is running riot as the Brazilian brings down Foden's cross-field pass brilliantly and puts a delicious ball into the box that takes West Ham's defenders out of contention for Haaland to finish superbly.

That's his 15th goal of the season and this is starting to feel all too familiar for the Hammers.

Wow that would have been something truly special as Eberechi Eze fools Chelsea's defence into thinking he is going to put a cross into the box but instead tries a cheeky lob. Sanchez is back-pedalling but somehow makes a stunning save to tip the effort over the bar.

The champions have their tails up and you can see the confidence is slowly but surely starting to return.

Haaland tries to set-up Bernardo Silva but puts too much on it and the Portuguese has to stretch for it with his eventual shot easily saved.

Armando Broja limps off and is replaced by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Bad luck for the 23-year-old, who seems to have rotten luck with injuries. He appears to be clutching his back.

It's a great save from the England No.1 as Semenyo looks to chip him from close-range and is denied by a strong hand from Pickford who didn't have much time to think about that one.

It should be 2-0 but somehow it isn't as Pedro Neto does brilliantly to get away from his man and bursts down the wing. He should have played it into Palmer's path earlier and if he had then it was a tap-in.

The Bees' pace is frigthening Southampton's defence and a trio of chances is somehow wasted as they hit the bar before Wissa forces a brilliant save from Ramsdale.

This could be a long afternoon for Southampton fans.

Unai Emery looks concerned as John McGinn goes down in the middle of the pitch and it's quickly confirmed he won't be able to continue against Leicester. Villa usually struggle without their captain and that looks as if it could be a lengthy layoff. Jacob Ramsey replaces him.

Assist of the weekend from Jadon Sancho here, methinks. Levi Colwill punched his pass into Sancho and with a shoulder drop, he sends Chris Richards to the shops.

He then snakes inside and with three Crystal Palace players on him, he taps the ball into to Cole Palmer. He then does the rest, beating Dean Henderson for 1-0. Lovely goal. 

Hoping this will improve but at this stage, it feels a classic early Jan fixture – two sets of players who have had loads of games in a short space of time and the tank is just about empty.

Atmosphere is flat, too. Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy has had a haircut similar to the one Malcolm Tucker had at the end of the first series of The Thick Of It.

It just has to be him as Cole Palmer gives Chelsea a lead with a brilliant strike.

The chance was initially carved open by some silky dribbling from Jadon Sancho who left Palace's defence in his wake to set-up the scoring opportunity.

Well we’ve not seen that too often in recent weeks: City go unpunished despite the opposition carving them open three times in the opening nine minutes and then Guardiola watches as his side score a somewhat streaky opener.

Maybe their luck is beginning to change. West Ham will be very frustrated at not being able to profit from those great positions slightly earlier on.

West Ham had been enjoying the better chances at the Etihad but now find themselves behind as Savinho's effort takes a wicked deflection and spins into the back of the net. That's two in two for the Brazilian.

Brentford haven't won a single Premier League game on the road this season but are doing their best to today as Kevin Schade firest them ahead.

It's his fifth goal of the season as he waits for Ramsdale to rush off his line before lobbing the Saints keeper.

Josh Acheampong, the 18-year-old defender from Chelsea's academy, is making his full Premier League debut here.

Needs must for Enzo Maresca, due to so many injuries with Wesley Fofana potentially out for the remainder of the season.

It means Chelsea have a centre-back pairing that has been entirely produced by Cobham, with Acheampong and Levi Colwill together. 

Chelsea have started on the front-foot against Crystal Palace as they look to get back to winning ways and are dominating the early exchanges at Selhurst Park.

Worrying about how long it’d been since the last unchanged City team was all rather pointless – they named the same XI in the first two games of the season!

Anyway… West Ham without Jarrod Bowen. Onus on others to come to the fore and do damage on the break. But an absolutely huge miss for a manager who needs results and quickly.

It's an early booking for Everton as Jarrad Branthwaite hacks down Evanilson. The English centre-back has got a long afternoon ahead of him now.

The Ballon d'Or winner is continuing to recover from what is expected to be a season-ending injury but isn't sitting at home or even in the stands with his feet up, but is instead helping his team-mates with their warm-ups.

Could we see Rordri become a coach in the future? He certainly seems to have the temperment for it.

It feels a key stage of Ollie Watkins’ Villa career. He has been outstanding here, especially under Unai Emery.

But he turns 30 this year and in recent games Jhon Duran has been preferred in the No9 role.

Despite Watkins’ quality, not many clubs pay big money for players his age anymore. What he really needs is a run of games and goals – and he should certainly get chances today.

Oh no the pressure continues to mount on Ange Postecoglou as Newcastle have just inflicted a 10th defeat of the season on Spurs.

The hosts initially took the lead through Dominic Solanke before conceding twice as Newcastle move up to fifth in the Premier League standings.

The 18-year-old was at risk of never playing for Chelsea again just a short time ago amid a contract standoff, but is now back fimly in the club's long-term plans after signing a new deal.

His reward is a first Premier League start as Chelsea travel to Selhurst Park alongside Levi Colwill at centre-back.

Huge day for the youngster!

It feels weird even asking the question because this is the same Man City squad that has gone on incredible runs to win the title and now we are asking whether they can win two games in a row, but that's the reality of their situation.

You have to go all the way back to the end of October to find such a result when at the time City beat both Wolves and Southampton before imploding in spectacular fashion.

West Ham have been thrashed by big teams this season already and City fans will be hoping it's their turn today.

I’d love to be able to tell you the last time Pep Guardiola named an unchanged team but it feels so long ago that it’d take all afternoon locating it.

Certainly interesting that Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish remain among the substitutes, while James McAtee is unfortunate to not make the starting XI after his impressive cameo at Leicester on Sunday.

Southampton are really going to miss the suspended Matheus Fernandes today.

The 20 year-old Portuguese midfielder has been the club's best player in what has been a miserable season so far and he is clearly destined for bigger things.

It’s baffling that Facundo Buonanotte has again been left out of the Leicester starting XI. He’s talented, committed and links brilliantly with fellow playmaker Bilal El Khannouss. Bizarre to see him back on the bench.

Also intriguing to see Unai Emery forced by injuries to go with Cash-Konsa-Mings-Digne back four. This was his first back four at Villa and his looked easily his most solid.

The Hammers were hammered 5-0 by Liverpool in their last match and such a score could be on the cards again today if Man City find form. West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has made five changes in the hope that doesn't happen.

The City boss is taking no chances today after his side finally clinched a win by beating Leicester 2-0 in their final game of last year. Will the same team click again today?

It's safe to say that Blues boss Enzo Maresca was unhappy with his team's previous 2-0 defeat against Ipswich as he makes six changes for today's London derby.

Palace picked up a hard-fought win over Southampton in their final game of 2024 and are boosted by the return of captain Marc Guehi today who is one of two changes.

Villa make three changes from the team that drew 2-2 with Brighton last time out as Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Morgan Rogers all drop out.

Leicester make two changes for their trip to Villa Park as Ruud Van Nistelrooy swaps out Kristiansen and Buonanotte following their previous 2-0 defeat against Man City.

The last time these sides met at Villa Park, Leicester won 4-2. Brendan Rodgers was their manager and Brazilian winger Tete dazzled on his debut after making a loan move from Lyon.

A lot has changed for both clubs since then. Villa are in the Champions League and Leicester fighting an immediate return to the Championship. But another six goals are certainly possible – though perhaps with a different outcome.
