Kelly Ripa broke down in tears over the death of beloved pet dog Chewie live on daytime television, admitting that she thought she had got all her grief out.

During an emotional episode of Live with Kelly and Mark on Wednesday, the presenter, 54, and husband Mark Consuelos, 53, confirmed that their adopted pooch had died aged 17.

Mark shared the news at the top of the program, revealing that Chewie's health had quickly declined and that she had stopped eating and become 'extremely dehydrated.'

While Kelly tried to hold it together, she then covered her eyes with her hands before wiping away her tears.

Eventually, she managed to say: 'I'm really sorry. I thought I got it all out, guys. I really thought I got it all out, and I apologize because I did not.

'This is not how I wanted this to go down. God, she gave us so much.'

Kelly, who also shares four-year-old dog Lena and children Michael Consuelos, 27, Lola Consuelos, 23, and Joaquin Consuelos, 21, with Mark, continued: 'We're filled with gratitude for this dog. I apologize, I'm so sorry. She gave us so much.

'As each one of our kids left for college and then moved out on their own, Chewie remained right there like our steadfast companion.'

Kelly went on to say that Chewie 'was so special and she was such a good girl.'

'She was very much like a cat, you know, in a lot of ways,' she added. 'She pet you when she wanted affection.

'She never let us kiss her face. She was very precious about her face. She was not that dog.

'And, after she passed away last night, I kissed her a thousand times on the face, I kissed her nose.

'I'd never kissed her nose before. And I know that she was like, somewhere in dog heaven, p**sed! But, I didn't care because it was just so nice to have that.'

Viewers were equally moved by the scenes and reached out to Kelly on her Instagram page to offer their condolences.
