Beloved fast-food chain shutters at LEAST 12 locations nationwide… is YOURS closing?

Several Wendy's locations in Michigan have closed just weeks after the fast-food chain announced it would shutter 140 of its restaurants nationwide.

The company appeared to confirm the closures after removing at least 12 restaurants from its website.

Wendy's did not confirm the exact dates of all closures, but multiple locations were operating last week, according to MLive.com.

A Wendy's spokesperson confirmed the restaurant chain had shared plans to close locations following a 'strategic review' of its global system in a statement to The Daily Telegram.

The spokesperson confirmed that two of the outposts were located in Adrian and Tecumseh, Michigan.

Those locations have hung signs on their doors redirecting customers to other Wendy's restaurants.

Additionally, a Wendy's in Livonia, Michigan, was listed as temporarily shut down and the daily hours of operation of a Wendy's inside a hospital in Detroit listed the location as closed.

There are now 226 Wendy's locations across the state.

Several Wendy's locations in Michigan have closed just weeks after the fast-food chain announced it would shutter 140 of its restaurants nationwide

The fast-food chain announced plans to close 140 locations nationwide before Christmas.

Wendy's confirmed in an October 2024 earnings call that the closures were the result of the locations being 'outdated' and 'underperforming.'

Wendy's CEO Kirk Tanner  has not discussed where the other Wendy's closures will be, but said 'it's not one particular area.'

The CEO added that Wendy's 'conducted a robust review of individual restaurants to ensure they meet our expectations for sales, have the profitability to fuel growth, and deliver the Wendy's brand experience for customers.'

The 140 closures are in addition to the 100 shuttered restaurants Wendy's announced in May 2024.

Similar to this this round of closures, the 100 locations announced in May were shut down partially due to underperformance.

Wendy's has planned to take proper steps moving forward to make sure its business successfully booms again.

'As a 55-year-old brand with more than 7,100 locations across the globe, closures are a normal activity to maintain a high-performing system,' a Wendy's spokesperson told The Daily Telegram.

'The brand is incredibly healthy, and we remain on track to meet our goal of 250-300 new restaurant openings for the year.'

The spokesperson added that by the end of this year, Wendy's will have opened over 500 locations between 2023 and 2024.

Wendy's confirmed it plans to replace the 140 restaurants with more profitable locations.

The company considers a location profitable if it makes an average unit volume of $2 million or more.

Wendy's is not the only restaurant chain that's shuttered several restaurants nationwide.

TGI Fridays abruptly closed 50 locations nationwide in October 2024 following reports the company considered filing for bankruptcy.

The 50 locations were in addition to the 36 restaurants TGI Fridays had already closed in the US last January.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit recently announced it would close 30 locations after shutting down almost 100 locations.

The barbecue chain blamed its continued drop in sales for the recent restaurant closures.
