 Each group will be given points with coordinates and they
will the distance using the distance formula presented on
the board by the teacher.
 the group must select a representative to discuss their
answer.

Examine this figure,


Notice that A1 A 2 is neither horizontal nor vertical. Therefore,
A1 A 2 is the hypotenuse of the right triangle with vertices A1 , A 2,
and B.
The lengths of the legs are A1 B = / X 2 −X 1 /
A1 B = / y 2− y 1 /.
By the Pythagorean Theorem, we have

Theorem
If A ( x 1 , y 1) and ( x 2, y 2) are any two points on the coordinate
plane, then

Example 1: Find the distance between a (4,3) and B(9,5)
Solution: Let x 1 = 4 x 2=9
y1 = 3 y 2 = 15

AB = √ ¿ ¿

= √¿ ¿

= √ 52 +122

= √ 25+144
= √ 169
= 13 Thus, the distance PQ is 13.

Example 2 : T (7,5), R(4,4) and I(5,1), (a) Find TR, RI and TI. (b) Show
that T, R, and I are collinear points.
Solution :

a. TR = √ ¿ ¿
= √ 9+1
= √ 10

RI = √ ¿ ¿
= √ 81+9
= √ 90 0r 3√ 10

TI = √ ¿ ¿
= √ 144+16
= √ 160 0r 4√ 10
b. TI = TR + RI
4√ 10 = √ 10 + 3√ 10
4√ 10 = 4√ 10
Thus , T, R, And I are collinear points
