Former boss at Easy Jet takes over at ITV as it battles an advertising slump and challenges from digital competitors
Carolyn McCall will be running Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster
Carolyn McCall takes the reins at ITV today as the firm battles an advertising slump and challenges from newer, digital competitors.
The 56-year-old chief executive, formerly the boss of EasyJet, assumes the running of Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster after Adam Crozier’s departure last June. Her arrival comes at a crucial time for ITV, where advertising revenues fell 7 per cent to £1.1 billion in the first nine months of its current financial year.
Under Crozier, the broadcaster tried to reduce its reliance on ads by beefing up its television production arm, leading to hit shows including Broadchurch, Downton Abbey, Vera and Poldark.
The company is also trying to promote its own ITV Hub website as it faces growing competition from on-demand streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.
McCall could potentially earn £25.2 million in her first five years in the new job, more than the £24.9 million Crozier had a chance to pocket.
But she will take home a salary of £900,000 – a figure £41,000 below Crozier’s.
On joining she is set to receive a ‘golden handshake’ of £5 million to compensate her for the EasyJet shares she is foregoing.
