Best paid jobs 2015: Compare your salary to the national average in this league table of 350 professions - and see the year's winners and losers
- ONS data reveals average UK salary for 350 professions (see table below)
- Chief executives and City brokers top the list
- Musicians, artists and window cleaners have seen biggest pay rises
- Quarry workers and crane drivers see pay cuts
It’s been a great year for artists, musicians and window cleaners in monetary terms at least, the latest official survey of UK annual salaries shows.
Musicians have seen pay rises averaging nearly 20 per cent in 2015, while cleaners are getting 17.8 per cent more, and window cleaners 12.3 per cent. Artists in general are earning 14.6 per cent more in 2015 than 2014, according to the huge annual data dump of pay scales by the Office For National Statistics highlights.
Agricultural machinery drivers fare well too. As do other motoring-based professions including driving instructors, cab and other professional drivers. This could be a reflection of cheaper fuel prices boosting these people’s incomes.
Coal miners are also earning more this year (up 9.7 per cent). Crane drivers, however, saw their pay cut by nearly 2 per cent.
Play day: Musicians and artists have seen some of the biggest pay rises in 2015.
It’s worth noting that the figures quoted in this sometimes controversial view of pay are the mean averages - all pay divided by the number of jobs - which can be distorted higher if there a few very big earners at the top end of the profession.
But while Bono and David Bowie may be on rather more, the average musician is living on £25,500 – below the national average of £27,607.
In parts of London £25,000 is the cost of renting a small flat for a year.
At the other end of the scale, among the biggest losers are PR directors, property managers and estate agents. Quarry workers also took an inexplicable 5.6 per cent financial scalping.
But the real winners are ‘elected officers and representatives’ – jobs often associated with universities. Could this be where the new £9,000 annual tuition fees for students are being spent? They’re earning two thirds more this year than last, according to the figures.
Similar to previous years - see 2014 best paying jobs here - the top overall earners are chief executives, City brokers, pilots, directors, lawyers, doctors and senior police officers.
The figures in these tables are annual gross pay for full and part-time employees, which explains why lunchtime school crossing patrols and bar and waiting staff come at the bottom of the pile.
Level paying field: Salaries have risen for farm machine operators and window cleaners.
