Family is forced to 'run for their lives' after their dog accidentally disturbed a nest of vicious, bloodthirsty wasps as they reveal their grim plans after barely surviving the incident

  • Dog run over in chaos, injuring its pelvis and fracturing its leg
  • Plans were made for Princess' cremation and a 'last meal'

A family had to run for their lives after their pet disturbed a wasps' nest leading to one of their dogs being run over in the chaos and plans being made for her cremation and a 'last meal'.

The Piper family, from Gerringong on NSW's South Coast, was on a bush walk when one of their pets, Miley, accidentally disturbed a vicious wasps' nest, causing them to attack the dogs.

Amid all the confusion, another of their pets Princess accidentally ran head first into a 4WD, leaving her with an injured pelvis, fractured leg and broken foot.

'We escaped running for our lives,' Lincoln Piper said.

'We took off from the swarm to get the dogs away, only to end up with Princess running around a hill then straight under the 4WD in all the panic.'

Not knowing whether Princess would live or die, and facing huge rehabilitation costs, the Pipers set up a GoFundMe page aiming to raise $15,000.

But things seemed to take a turn for the worse after they set up the page with Mr Piper posting on Facebook she was facing a worrying health battle.

'We have fought hard for Princess but unfortunately months of recovery with a very uncertain outcome is not an option,' he said.

'She can't go to the toilet and there will be no guarantee she will ever be our agile feisty Princess ever again.'

The family had already accumulated significant costs, they said, but offered to refund in full the funds already raised.

'Alternatively the money will pay for our costs to date and for Princess to be cremated,' Mr Piper wrote.

'I can't even tell you how devastated and broken I am. She's enjoying some company with her favourite comrades and a last meal.

'I'm ... not looking forward to saying goodbye as we really are best mates.'

Despite their fears she would die, somehow Princess found some inner strength - with the help of veterinary care and modern science - and the family said it was 'looking like she can be rehabilitated and live a somewhat normal life again'.

'She will need physio and hydro therapy along with ongoing consultations,' Mr Piper wrote.

In a further update, Mr Piper had better news to share with all those closely following Princess' journey.

'Just got off the phone to a specialist who has assessed her file and think she sounds as if she's in a really good place to recover,' he wrote.

'She survived the worst of the life-threatening beginnings but is going to need tests, treatment, medicine and rest to recover.'

He added that the vets all commended him for not taking the easy path and having the dog put down.

'In fact, buying her time was all she needed. They said that was and is always the very last option and appears an option that was not needed,' he said.

Mr Piper thanked all those who contributed to the fundraiser, which had surpassed its $15,000 target by Tuesday afternoon.

'Princess has a long road to recovery but it's a miracle she survived and I can't thank you enough. If it wasn't for all of you, she would of had to be put down,' he said.

One of the almost 500 donations to the GoFundMe for Princess was for $1,000, with many of the funders also leaving comments and well wishes.

'I could never imagine losing my fur baby,' wrote one.

'Wish I could give more but hope you guys are doing alright,' another said.

A third spoke for many in saying 'Don't know who you are, don't know where you live but I do know what it feels to be broke and needing to keep your Pup alive.

'You'll make it work, you have it in you. Go do what you need to do.'
