Scunthorpe United apologise for 'unfortunate error' after missing 'S' leads to X-rated calendar
It was designed as a Christmas gift for the most dedicated fans of Scunthorpe United, with fans' names printed alongside pictures of the favourite players.
But supporters of the Championship club were left shocked when a missing letter on a 2011 calendar gave one page an unintentionally vulgar tone.
The North Lincolnshire side has now apologised to fans and sent a specially printed sticker after the 'S' was left out of the club's name on the calendar's September page, creating an obscenity in large capital letters.
Spelling slip-up: Scunthorpe United, with former striker Paul Hayes pictured, have apologised after leaving the 'S' out of the club's name in a new calendar
Scunthorpe fan Jamie Muir had received the personalised year planner as a Christmas present from his mother.
But the pub landlord was taken aback when he saw a glaring mistake in a message that should have read 'Jamie Muir, Scunthorpe United Number One Fan'.
'I had to rub my eyes,' Mr Muir told The Sun. ' I thought I was seeing things. Initially, I thought the publishers had made a mistake with mine.
'But then I got a letter and a sticker. They asked us to put it over the mistake but I reckon I'll keep it as it is!'
The official club letter to fans attempted to play down the blunder, saying supporters 'may or may not be aware of a slight spelling mistake'.
'It has only been brought to our attention recently,' the letter continued.
'Please find enclosed a stick for your calendar, which we have specially made to conceal the error. It is to be placed on top of the spelling mistake on the September page.'
The letter concludes: 'I can not apologise enough that this has happened.'
The club has blamed publishers of the £12.99 calendar for the mistake.
The error makes a bad week worse for Scunthorpe United after their 2-1 home defeat to Watford was marred by repeated floodlight failures.
