Armed police swooped on a university campus after reports of a student with a gun, only to discover they were at a James Bond themed party.

Thames Valley Police officers were called to the University of Buckingham after sightings of an 'armed man'.

They found the student with a fake gun, who was going to the party that day.

He was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm at 11.15am yesterday.

A spokesman for the University of Buckingham said: 'A student was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm.

'There was a university-organised James Bond party.'

A Thames Valley Police spokesman defended their reaction to the reports.

He said: 'We were called to an incident and responded in a swift but proportionate manner.' 

The 24th James Bond film, starring Daniel Craig, will be released on Monday.
