It's a good job this shopping mall was closed to customers after night vision cameras captured the moment a leopard stalked its way around the car park.

The big cat can be seen taking his early morning walk in the Mbombela District of the city of Nelspruit in north-eastern South Africa.

The video that according to the time stamp took place at 4am was uploaded to YouTube by Benno Stander, online editor at Lowveld Media.

The leopard was filmed bounding through the grounds at the Weylandts store

He said: 'CCTV cameras at the new Weylandts store on Weir Street, Riverside, caught a leopard wandering by as if it was the most normal thing in the world.'

Located on the Crocodile River, Nelspruit is a major stopover point for tourists on their way to the Kruger National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves, and the travellers are a major source of income for the local economy.

Undeterred, the leopard continues on for its brisk morning stroll in Nelspruit, South Africa

But most of them were not expecting to find a leopard walking down the main street, although according to police, by the time it was dawn and people were starting to emerge, the leopard had already vanished.

The number of leopards in the country is unknown but local media argue that the hunting of leopards, for sport or by farmers protecting their livestock, poses a serious threat to their long-term survival.
