As the founder of Poundland, Steve Smith is no stranger to a bargain.
And it would seem he even wants to offer the best deal possible on the sale of his home.
The multi-millionaire put his 15,000 sq ft Shropshire mansion on the market for £6.5million last November but knocked £750,000 off the price in March. Yesterday he took another £750,000 off the total - bringing the total markdown to £1.5million in just 12 months.
The entrepreneur launched Poundland with his wife, Tracey, in 1990. In an incredible rags-to-riches tale, the couple built up their brand and by 2000 the company was booming, boasting a million customers every week and an annual turnover of £200million.
They sold the business for £50million in 2002 and the couple used some of their earnings to buy Hammer Hill, which overlooks the Severn Valley, two years later. Always ambitious, they set about doubling the original 1923 property in size.
Complete with a helicopter pad and fully-stocked pub, the 13-bedroom mansion boasts 80 windows and five grand reception rooms, including a drawing room with a sprung dance floor edged with disco lights sunk into the blameless pale oak.
With only one of their three children left at home, the Smiths want to downsize but have struggled to find a buyer for their sprawling home.
While Mr Smith had hoped to avoid more than £100,000 in commission and fees by listing the property with his own online estate agents, EstatesDirect.com, some property experts warned this may have led him to overestimating the value of his home.
