This is the moment a fierce storm in California tossed a flea market in the air sparking panic among terrified shoppers.

Authorities say 11 people were injured after a wind gust in Galt, in Northern California blew tents into the air before they came crashing down on top of customers. 

Fire officials say the six to seven tents were tossed into the air at the flea market amid bad weather on Wednesday.

Dramatic footage shows heavy material and poles being lifted up as people start screaming.

Moments later, the video, taken on a mobile phone, shows parts of the flea market crash down to the ground. 

KCRA reports that while many shoppers had already left the market visited by hundreds of people, there were still many vendors and customers, and workers cleaning up. 

Officials say those hurt had minor injuries ranging from head trauma to a bloody nose.

Cosumnes Fire Department battalion chief Kris Hubbard said is quoted as saying: 'When you get a pole flinging around through the air, it can do some serious damage.

'If there were more people in the area, it could have had more impact.'

Vendor Fabian Pineda added:  'It was just scary. I thought I was going to fly up with the poles. I thought it was going to take all of us with it. I saw the kids running around and I was yelling, trying to get them to get inside or under the tables.'
