A dog owner was left shocked and heartbroken after a crow snatched her puppy from her backyard.

Fudge, a four-month-old miniature chihuahua, was swooped up by a crow after owner Heather Sinden, from Kilsyth, Victoria, let the puppy out into the backyard to go to the toilet.

Heather Pride, Ms Sinden's daughter, said her mother was on the deck when she heard the dog 'scream'.

'She'd done about three screams then Mum turned around in panic and she just saw the black bird fly away and Fudge was gone,' Ms Pride told 3AW

'The dog was normally inside, she was just outside going to go to the toilet and Mum was quite concerned about the crows,' she said in a report by the Herald Sun.

Fudge was a recent addition after her family found out Ms Sinden had lung cancer two weeks before Christmas.

Ms Pride added that her mother is 'beside herself at the moment'.

'We got her the Chihuahua and it comforts her during the day, being by herself with her husband at work, so she was very attached to her.'

'She only said just weeks ago "what would I do without this little puppy, she's just everything."'

Ms Pride and her family have taken to social media to aid the search and have had help from people looking in surrounding areas and nearby parks.

While there has been no sign the miniature chihuahua, Ms Pride hopes the puppy will be found safe soon.
