Concerned beachgoers have captured the dramatic moment a group of surfers were thrown into the water after an enormous wave smashed their boats.

The men were jumping off their small fishing boats off the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand recently and found themselves in strife after not anticipating the size of the swell.

Witnesses who filmed the struggle said the ordeal looked like a 'complete yard sale' and said: 'We need to help them Bro'.

Three of the surfers, including one holding a surfboard, are thrown from the vessel just short of some rocks. 

As they are washed toward the shore, a second boat attempting to help is also battered by a huge wave.

Its quick-thinking occupant leaps off the vessel in the last second and manages to avoid having the small boat land on top of him
