A policewoman has run into the ocean to rescue a snorkler in distress and struggling to get to shore.

The officer was on patrol when she was alerted to a man struggling in the water at 1.10pm Wednesday on Glenelg Beach near Adelaide, South Australia.

A South Australia police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the swimmer had a 'medical episode' while snorkeling and couldn't make it to shore by himself.

The officer ran into the sea in full uniform to pull him out to safety.

The lucky swimmer was treated at the beach by ambulance officers and was doing well after the dramatic rescue.

A member of the public captured the rescue and sent it to SA police commending the good work of the quick-thinking policewoman.

The spokesman said recent conditions at the popular metropolitan beach had been 'pretty choppy' and 'not swimming weather at the moment.'
