Rick Vergis, McDonald's co-op president for the San Francisco Bay Area, has so far reported that the fries are a hit. The fried potatoes are seasoned with garlic grown in Gilroy, California.

'Being that we're located close to the "Garlic Capitol of the World," it was only natural that we'd want to create an offering that showcases this local flavor,' Vergis said in an email to SF Gate.

'Gilroy Garlic Fries are such an iconic offering to the Bay Area, and we're excited to hear our customers' feedback,' he wrote.

The new fries are part of an effort at McDonald's 'to experiment with regional flavors and food on its menu,' according to Business Insider.

'We’re proud of the work done by local franchisees and the regional team to create this menu item with locally-sourced garlic and we look forward to introducing Gilroy Garlic Fries to our customers in the Bay Area,' Michael Haracz, manager of culinary innovation at McDonald's USA, said.

Fries cost different amounts at different franchises but the small special fry is $0.59 more than normal version and the large is $0.69 extra.

Those wishing to test out the fries may visit franchises at 1398 W. San Carlos St. near Meridian Avenue, 2191 Monterey Road and 4838 San Felipe Road, all in San Jose, and 3509 Homestead Road in Santa Clara.
