Cop a load of this! NYPD respond to New Zealand Police's 'Running Man' challenge with their own version of the dance that is sweeping the internet

The New York Police Department have responded to a challenge from New Zealand cops to perform the 'Running Man' challenge currently sweeping the internet.

Earlier this week footage of the New Zealand Police Recruitment Organisation went viral, and has since been viewed over 6.5 million times.

On Tuesday the NYPD performed their own version of the dance move to the Ghost Town DJs track My Boo underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, complete with a mic drop at the end.

While everyone from sports stars to news anchors has participated in the challenge, police departments have been among the most enthusiastic adopters (NYPD, pictured)

They were nominated to take pare in the challenge by the New Zealand Police Recruitment Organisation 

The NYPD clip features one officer finishing the clip with a 'mic drop' and dropping his radio 

'Calling in some help from younger members of the community, they posted online: 'For the NYPD version we brought some backup from PS/IS 323 in Brooklyn.'

The police department also called on the New York City Fire Department, Boston Police Department and Police Scotland to create their own version of the video.

Since being uploaded less than 24 hours ago it has been viewed more than 2.5 million times and flooded with positive comments from the U.S. and New Zealand.

'I'm so proud to be a New Zealander and that our police force has challenged other police to show everyone that there are some police that live among us and are not as bad as everyone thinks,' one woman wrote.

'He'll probably get in trouble for dropping radio', posted another, referring to the NYPD police officer's 'mic drop' at the end of the clip where the dropped his radio.

The NYPD were challenged to take on the internet trend by their New Zealand counterparts, who also nominated a number of Australian forces.

'We catch people on the run every day, this was a new ‪#‎runningmanchallenge‬ for our team,' the New Zealand recruitment organisation wrote.

'Are you up for it?' the post continued, naming several forces across Australia alongside the Isles of Scilly Police and New York Police Department.

Thousands took to the post to congratulate the force, with many praising it as 'awesome' and 'great'

The video also received an overwhelmingly positive response from people who said it was great to see a different side of the police. 

'Great to see the police having a bit of fun,' said one user while others described it as 'awesome' and 'great'.

The video was shared more than 72,000 times since being posted on Tuesday.
